Hi jjsjjsjjs,

Open msconfig and look at the startup tab and make sure Realtek HD Audio Manager is enabled. If it isn't, enable it and reboot.

Okay, call me an idiot!  I've wasted countless hours of my life:)  I did what you said and it didn't work either.  I finally unplugged the speakers and plugged them back in ......voila'.  I had jiggled it before but no luck.  I still have no idea what happened as I said I had heard that sound before with the HDMI cable.  Come to think of it I bet I jiggled the cord then.  It must not fit tight enough.  I shorted myself on getting new speakers when I got the new XPS, less than a year ago.

Well, thank you very much, I'm sorry I wasted your time too.

Jimmy Ricks and The Ravens are rockin' the cabin again:)    j
