OptiPlex GX110 XP Professional only allows 600x900 pixels display resolution

Make sure the video buffer is set to 8 Megs Ram in the BIOS and then install the Driver.

Since reading all the above, a new problem has arisen. A recent Windows update seems to have by-passed the initial Dell logo and BIOS display before the Windows starts to install. This removes the option of accessing the BIOS set-up which I need to check Video RAM allocation. These updates have incorporated new log-in and Windows eye candy and modified some of the usual displays as well, but the operation thereafter seem quite OK. Any clues?

Windows updates do not affect the Bios.  The screen you are talking about is called Change the way users Logon/Off.

Control Panel,  User Accounts.  Un Check Fast user Switching and Un Check Use Welcome Screen.

F2 Gets into Bios.

Thanks for that peed Step. I found the panel in User Accounts but the two items that you specified are greyed out and a panel comes up saying "Program Client Services for Netware" needs to be uninstalled. I cannot find this program using search, where might it be?

"Client Services for Netware" is under control panel network.  

Open Network Connections (Start > Settings> Control Panel > Network Connections)
Highlight the Local Area Connection entry where the Novell Client for NT/2000 is being used.
Click Properties to bring up the properties dialog for that connection.
Highlight the Novell Client for Windows entry in the connection properties.
Press the Uninstall button. Windows will confirm that you want to remove the Novell Client for Windows from all connections and not just the current connection.
Answer Yes to this prompt and the Novell Client for Windows and dependent Windows network services will be removed.

This too has nothing to do with F2 Bios setup or Video.

The plot thickens! I have followed the last recommendation but Local Area Connections does not have the Novel Client for NT2000 in it, only my printers that are in use. Where do we go from there? There seems to be a large number of references to others having similar problems using various combinations of OS's.

It seems that my problem has been confounded by the fact that the only happening before the display disappeared was an unknown number of updates had been applied during a shutdown. I quite understand that Windows only gets into action well after the BIOS screen has finished.  All I want is to get the normal pre-Windows display restored so that I can deal with the display resolution problem. It seems that my assumption that my assertion that M$ updates might have had anything to do with it was a red herring.

Remotely diagnosing Pentium 3 or even Pentium 2 XP install issues or malware issues is not Addressed here. You may need to reinstall your os.
