Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have the dedicated GPU chip so I will probably do some more research on the I5 chip and I7 ( operating temperatures) and then make a decision on whether to upgrade or not. Luckily I also have a Dell 90w power supply to hand so that is not a problem.

Part of the answer depends on your video chip - if your system has Intel graphics, you can't use any quad-core i7s (they have no GPU onboard).  Even for a system that can take a quad i7, that's asking for trouble with overheating.

You CAN use first-generation Corei5 CPUs (three digit part numbers).  You CANNOT use any second, third or fourth generation CPUs (i.e., four digit part numbers).

To use an i5, you're likely going to need a new power adapter (90W) if your current one is only 65W (which is likely).

An i7 -- if you choose one - will need a 130W power adapter.
