Thanks for a good thread. I have a similar problem with my Dell XPS. No audio is coming from the speakers or headphone jack, yet all audio configurations have been confirmed, Realtek drivers updated and audio indicator shows that sound is registering through sound card. (i.e. green meter/indicator shows sound). As a final test, I paired and connected a bluetooth speaker and I could hear the sound just fine.
I have also reverted back to previous restore point and still no sound. I have yet to try a BIOS update, but not sure if my other testing proves a hardware issue or issue with board. Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.
Without knowing your model can't give details, but suggest you run whatever of the audio hardware diagnostics are available to you and also try the native Windows audio driver. Diagnostics.
As a final test, I paired and connected a bluetooth speaker and I could hear the sound just fine.
A bluetooth audio device is an external audio device that has its own DAC so the internal DAC could still have failed.
> Go to the Latitude E6520 support page. Select your operating system in the drop down box. Expand the Audio category. Download & install the IDT audio driver.
> Run the ePSA tests and click on the "Perform Quick Audio Check" button.
If you do not hear the tones through the speakers during the test then the speakers have become disconnected or have failed. If you do hear the tones during the tests but no sound comes through them when you are back in Windows, and you have installed a fresh copy of the IDT audio driver, then there might have been a failure of the sense pin circuit within the headphone jack. See the 1st section of the Headphone Jack FAQ for details about that particular issue.
i am also facing the same problems...my model is Inspiron 5421 14R,,,i bought is one year ago...sound of the loudspeaker appears and disappears again...and most of the time i failed to get any sound from loudspeaker....any help please?

Hello. Go to the Inspiron 14R 5421 support page. Select your operating system in the drop down box. Expand the Audio category and down load & install the Realtek audio driver.
If you still have the same symptoms after doing that then contact tech support if your laptop is still under warranty.
I used my laptop for dance practice and in excitement I increased the volume to full 100% on both media player and laptop's speaker.
Suddenly the speakers volume went zero.
But when I plugged in my headphones it was working properly.
Hello. Run the ePSA or PSA test.
If your laptop has ePSA, do the "Perform Quick Audio Check" test.
If your laptop does not have that test then Run the PSA but intentionally fail the color bar test as explained in this link.
If you do not hear the beeps or tones during the test then the laptop's speakers have failed or the connection is loose. If it is still under warranty then contact tech support to have it repaired. [Before contacting tech support remove all of your media players except Windows Media Player.]
If you need further help please reply back with the results of the test, and please say which operating system your laptop has.
I've a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520(2012 model) using Win 8.1 Pro, and i'm also experiencing same problem no sound from internal speakers but i can hear sound through headset. When i performed ePSA diag, i didn't hear any beeps when "Quick audio check" is performed. Please guide me.

The failure to hear tones during that test means that the speakers has become disconnected or are loose. If you are still under warranty contact tech support to have the problem fixed.
If you are not under warranty and want to try to perform the repair yourself, disassemble your laptop to where you can get to the speaker cable. Unplug it and then re-plug it. Test the speakers. If they still do not work then replace them.
You can get instruction for replacing the speakers by going to the Inspiron 15R 5520 support page, click on Manuals, select your language and click on Owner's Manual. That document is actually the dis-assembly manual and it has a section about the speakers. For best results open the manual with Adobe Reader in order to view it correctly.
