All,

We have an update that should be coming out near the end of this month (April).  Make sure you have automatic updates turned on in Dell Backup and Recovery or that you are manually checking for updates on a periodic basis.

We have made several changes to supported media and media creation, including the 'rescue disk' operation.

Thanks,

Hello David,

I have followed this thread through to find a solution to the similar problem I am having with dell backup and recovery.

I see that it is not working for other users as well. My system is Dell Inspiron AIO 2330 "purchased recently".

What I have done is going beyond trying:

1. Updated windows 8 to windows 8.1 and created a backup of 9.30 GB and I have managed to create a backup of about 9.30 GB that was uploaded to a WD external 1TB USB hdd

2. Tested the backup to recover from "failed" to boot

3. Changed the booting system from UEFI to Legacy and tried to recover "failed". Restored boot to UEFI upon failure

4. Tried to recover from the backup and failed to boot

5. Tried to create a new backup "failed". Error all the time in the 2nd phase

6. Created a windows image using windows 8.1 utility "success" 21 GB

7. Tried to recover and restore windows image from bios "failed" to boot

8. Removed windows 8 and deleted all partitions and installed Windows 7 "Legacy boot"

9. Tried to recover from bios "failed" to boot

10. On Windows 7 Can't create a backup "error" in the 2nd phase and creating a backup "failed"

11. New error showing up now from desktop that dell backup and recovery can't find the recovery partition "obvious"

12. Dell backup and recovery version 1.6.1.1

My conclusions:

1. No back DVDs are provided or shipped with the new purchased computer "Dell unprofessional attitude"

2. The backup and recovery software is "recovery partition" dependent which makes it a very low quality software for that it acts like a copier and doesn't build a backup from the real running system

3. The inability of the system to read a recovery backup from bios screen regardless of what type of booting system is chosen

4. Having all the partitions backed up to USB drives or DVD didn't solve out a recovery issue and still the system is a big fail when it comes to recognizing a recovery image from the bios

5. There are some booting issues with how the system detects a recovery image that needs to be addressed

6. A windows backup image even if successful can't be detected in the booting phase "odd enough"

All in all the above took me 3 days just out of curiosity to examine and check the reliability of Dell backup and recovery and the result is a big fat ZERO for using that.

On a serious and realistic note:

If Dell is trying to save some money or cutting cost by not concluding the recovery dvds with a purchased system, why Dell is not into having the full system downloadable!

Regards,

Jaser

Wernerkoen,

Please provide me a little more detail about the issue you are having.  Also, system, OS and Version of Dell Backup and Recovery that is currently installed.

Have you updated Dell Backup and Recovery to the latest version?

Thanks,

I have a brand new, purchased 7/11/14, Inspiron 3542 running Windows 7 Ultimate, it came with Pro and I upgraded it.  I've been trying unsuccessfully to create a Factory Reinstall Disk using Dell Backup and Recovery and it continually gives errors on my DVD's when it attempts to write to them.  I've toasted 4 DVD's trying to get this to work.  The version of DB&R that I'm using is 1.7.1.2.

We have tested this functionality many times.  Have you tried a different brand of DVD media?  You can also backup your factory image to a USB key.  Note: the factory image will be Win7 Pro, not Ultimate.  You can also create a bootable backup (Rescue Disk) on an external HDD.

I can try to find some other media to use.  These are memorex DVD's that I've used successfully in several other Dell systems.

So, I tried it again this morning and, of course, it errored on the media.  I then took that very same DVD and popped it into an Optiplex 780 and burnt an ISO using a 3rd party product and it worked just fine.  I then took the three DVD's from last week out of my trash and burnt every one of them on my Optiplex without issue.  I'd be willing to consider it but I'm really thinking it's not my media.

Have you tried burning something else to DVD on the Inspiron?  Wondering if your Optical Drive is having issues?

Other than that, I will need some logs to send to Engineering.  Will tell you how to get those if you can verify above.

It looks like there may be an issue with the drive itself.  I was able to use it to install office without issue but I can't seem to write to it with anything.  Everything complains about the media.

So, it gets weirder.  After Microsoft DVD burner and Burn4Free and just burning from Windows Explorer all failed, I decided to run the Dell PC Checkup before I contacted support just to see what the diags might say.  I ran a Custom Scan and chose the DVD-RW drive.  The self test and CD Read test are selected by default.  I added the DVD+R write test, since that's the media I have.  It passed the tests with flying colors so now I'm uncertain as to what to do next.  I'll probably contact Dell support.

Yep, sounds like a problem with the drive.  This is a new system so you should definitely call support on that one and get a new drive.  Might want to check www.dell.com/support first to see if there is a firmware update for that drive or something.

Thanks,

I just thought I would let everyone know that I  successfully created a set of 3 recovery DVDs on an Inspiron 3737 purchased in May  2014. It did mess up one disc.

Back to original post please, which was about using an external USB Hard Drive (not flash and not DVDs)

Using version v1.7.1.2 PREMIUM updated on 09/01/2014 from 1.6.0.3

Dell OptixPlex 9020 running Windows 7 Pro OS.

Using Western Digital Passport Ultra on USB 3.0 port, it is 1 TB and formatted NTFS (no existing files).

First, ran the "Bootable Backup - Create Your Rescue" and selected the E: "My Passport" drive. Under DRIVE CONTENT options I was only allowed "Reinstall Disks", the "System Backup" option was greyed out which surprised me since I bought the PREMIUM. So I assumed this was two step, Rescue to exHDD first and then System Backup.

PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT the "Factory Backup" option for USB Flash / DVDs so please don't hijack this thread.  FWIW, burning a USB Flash and DVDs worked fine on mu OptiPlex 9020.

This is the option that SHOULD allow me to take an external USB HARD DRIVE and have the rescue disk AND full system backups for MULTIPLE Dell PC's all in ONE external hard drive.  At least that is what I was promised when I paid $40 for a PREMIUM upgrade.

Resue Disk option ran successfully and created a new partition on exHDD call MBR_Boot (G: drive FAT32) that was approx 500M in size, assumed this to be the "bootable" part.  The other partition called "My Passport" (E:) remained.  All are accessible and pass chkdsk...

But when I go the "Backup" command from DBR Home and select the E: drive it constantly either says create new chain or says existing chain found, should it backup and create new.... No matter I do I can't perform full system backups to exHDD

Two questions for "product developer" I see posting here:

(a) When I initially created the Rescue Disk, shouldn't I have been able to select the "System Backup" check box to create two partitions on the exHDD???

(b) Is the NTFS format of the exHDD as delivered from WD a problem?
