Solved? A fix, a dilemma, and some fingerpointing, but a fix in sight. Some back ground info:

----------------------------------------------------------------

monitor Dell UP3214q revision A00, November 2013 manufacture/china
My rig:
EVGA SR-x dual socket motherboard,
Ev2 intel 16 cores
192GB RAM
4 Titan GTX SC / Gen3, 16x lanes, update 4k screen bios for video cards (from nvidia/evga)
14 SSD Raid 0 array
1650w power supply
Windows 7 ultimate, 64 bit
Clean services, spartan processes, OS tweaked
---------------------------------------

With the issue  as identified in this forum. All drivers from Nvidia are going to display the dell issue, except for two broken drivers for 4k support. Yes, that's what i said. Two of the nvidia driver series actually resolve the issue, and they resolve it because they have broken 4k support. In these drivers, the DP 1.2 is broken, it sees the monitor as two distinct monitors, one active, one not available. In all the other drivers, the monitor is seen as one display under DP1.2 after a reboot. (see in nvidia control panel in the ski/monitor config tab). AT THE SAME TIME - the dell monitor when warm - yes, when warm, relays a correct handshake to the video card/driver. When cold it relays the wrong return. All the other drivers are expecting a different handshake than they are receiving when its cold and are looking for some specific criteria. The two broken drivers are not looking for that specific criteria and hence ignore both outcomes. The beta driver brakes other things so I won't mention that one but the WHQL 327.23 does work. Here are the clues.

Look at the driver you have installed:
pull up the nvidia control panel -if you have the 327.23 in the monitor/sli config tab do you see 1 monitor (green) or two monitors (green and greyed out)? If you see 1 monitor, dell monitor at dp 1.2 60hz is going to give you the cold boot issue and half screen. If you see the 2 monitors, then the dell issue does not occur (If in the nvidia control panel yo only see 1 monitor in the sli config tab, then you don't have driver 327.23). In this case the one green monitor (next to the greyed out monitor) in the nvidia control panel is at 3840x2160 and is at 60hz. Driver 327.23 WHQL with the broken implementation works. Please remember it works because it has broken 4k support. The real issue is the firmware on the UP3214q. I know this post will get a lot of folks describing different elements, but test what I said first, then give feedback.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS -how to install 327.23 if you have a newer driver in place
1. change monitor to dp 1.1, restart pc
2. launch installer for 327.23
3. select custom and select clean install
4. upon completion launch whatever force gen 3/ pci 3.0 bat file to make sure your card will run at 3.0
5. restart pc
6. in windows, at desktop, go ahead and change monitor to dp 1.2
7. full shutdown
8. Start PC
9. go to nvidia control panel go to your monitor SLI config tab, set sli back up
10. restart or shutdown and start. The half screen issue should no longer occur
---------------------------------------------------------------------

again, this is the 4k broken driver, that is why the up3214q works with it ASUS p321q (same lcd, panel, controller card etc) had the same issue, they solved it with a user installable firmware update - this will be the only fix Dell can do if they care. Otherwise, we will not be able to move off a broken driver.
------------------------

to Dell: I'm not sure how many ways the same sound needs to be explained but I'll give it a shot:

******Dell, FIX THE FIRMWARE with a user installable firmware update******
* That is not going to occur. ChrisM

Jay Venturi

I just ran across this temporary fix by Jay Venturi on page 10 of this thread and I can confirm that it works perfectly. Obviously it's only a stopgap until the true fix - firmware update - is released  but this eliminates all of the problems I've been experiencing (which is all of the problems everyone has been experiencing).  The only games I really play are UT3, Anno 2070 and Titanfall, and I can see no difference in the framerate or quality in any of them in moving back to this older driver, so for me at least there was nothing to lose. It even fixed the multimonitor support problem. Jay, thank you so much for this solution, and for posting it so clearly. Dell, release the firmware update already.

This is great for those who have an older graphics card....I have the gtx780 TI and it is not supported on 327.23 according to the installation. Anyone with ideas?

So, Dell is officially not supporting their product? issue summary---> when using it at its full native resolution in dp1.2 as intended - half the screen literally is black and non functional on many random boots and logins. switching between applications the 1/2 the monitor turns off. Issue was identified as a firmware issue and was resolved by other manufacturers of the same monitor. Let's summarize based on dell rep responses:
............................

ChrisM said the official policy it to buy a new non functional dell monitor, send it in for a firmware (Chris M) Dell rep refuses to relay if it even fixes the proven issue) then they will replace the new monitor with a used one.
..............................

Has everybody followed the bouncing ball?
..............................

1. Monitor has a severe firmware issue- the dell up3214q is the same monitor as the Sharp and the Asus p321q.
2. After months of denials and deflection by Dell, Dell announces they have a new firmware (ChrisM)
3. Dell won't release a user installable firmware fix (ChrisM) - Asus and sharp had same issue but released a user installable firmware that resolved the issue- the other manufacturers were keen on customer service.
4. Dell won't confirm their replacement firmware even fixes the issue (ChrisM)
5. Dell policy is to send in the new monitor for unconfirmed firmware fix (ChrisM)
6. Dell policy is to replace your new monitor with a used one with the unconfirmed fix (ChrisM)
7. Replacement used monitor may or may not have fixed issue (ChrisM)
8. Replacement used monitor will be subject to all the other issues as we'll - such as only 1 in 4 monitors on average according to this forum, does not suffer from dead pixels or stated as 1 in 4 monitors is free of dead pixels.
...............................

If one steps back and looks at this travesty of customer service and product quality on a $3000 monitor (their flagship monitor) the none must conclude that service and quality will only worsen from here on.
................................

4 possibilities:
1. Dell or the moderator will edit my post again or remove it again.
2. Dell will suddenly actually provide customer service: you get new fully functional up3214q free off any dead pixels and free of the firmware issue where people get the monitor they thought they were buying in the first place.
3. They release a user installable firmware and avoid all the returns, additional expenses, loss of business and the inevitable black eye.
4. Everyone returns the monitor they bought and posts on every forum, newegg product forum, amazon forum, and other product supplier forum -their dissatisfaction - you can even just copy and paste this post if you want
................................

So Dell, ChrisM, product supervisors etc - you are invited to resolve this issue correctly. On behalf of this forum we officially ask to be treated with respect, cordiality, and the ability to have a defect free new product . We also ask that if you're not going to do so - officially reply here so that we, the members of the forum may take appropriate action.

..................................
Thank you

A humble representative

Jay

Well said, Jay.

Option 2 or 3 for me. Or a complete refund (I purchased directly from Dell).

2. Replace my UP2414Q with a fully functional, brand new, UP2414Q.

3. Provide me a user-installable firmware

Or a complete refund.

Again, NO. That will never happen. ChrisM

I totally agree with Jay, I will not trade my "perfect" UP3214Q model for a refurbished item that might have light bleeding, dead pixels and other weird issues. This is a $3,000 monitor, not $300. Please release a user installable firmware!!! It will allow Dell to save on costs in the same time and avoid getting a lemon for users. Dell not accepting this simple solution makes them look ridiculous, all other manufacturers do it.

Solved by update firmware which received from Technical Support specialist. I hope DELL will follow the same path.

ChrisM already said "It wont happen".

My point is: that SHOULD happen. This is not a $300 purchase.

No argument here - i also have an UP3214Q.

I just contacted EVGA support to see what their take on the issue (unlike Dell, they got back to me in a day) - they have updated firmware for Titan for 4K displays - will try it in the evening and will post results. I think i'll have to call Dell support again, as the promised answer in 3 days did not happen, but at the moment i am very unhappy with the way they handling this issue.

This might help others. I finished my setup, using 2 U3014 and 1 UP3214Q. I have zero issues with BIOS Post or sleep, even if the UP3214Q firmware is broken. When I reboot the PC, one of U3014's takes over and displays all information until I'm prompted with the Windows login. At that moment the UP3214Q kicks in and I have a signal on all 3 monitors. I'm using a 10 feet StarTech MDP2DPmm10 Mini Display Port to Display Port Adapter cable for UP3214Q and 2 10 feet BlueRigger DVI Male to DVI Male Digital Dual-Link cables for the U3014's.

Everything is connected to an Asus Geforce 660 running on latest 335.23 drivers:

Surprisingly, the StarTech cable works perfect, I get MST at 60Hz on DisplayPort 1.2:

The secret is to have at least one additional monitor connected to your PC and everything will work just fine. I tested this with a Dell U2412M also, everything was OK. Here it is the final setup:

Chris:

I strongly suggest that you ask sales to put a note about this issue on the product page!
* I do not have that power! ChrisM

I bought my UP3214Q a week ago and received it yesterday, only to bump right into this problem first hand :( If I had known about this in advance I would have waited buying until the issue was fixed, saving me a big disappointment and both of us the trouble of sending monitors around. With this said, I think the panel is a huge step forward and a tool that will make me more productive every day. Good job. I am looking forward to a fix to the problem. Btw, my configuration is: 2 x MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming in SLI and Windows 8.1.

Tested with the updated EVGA firmware. Not much luck. However, when the UP3214Q does not seem to be able to come out of sleep, power cycling completely (e.g. disconnecting the PC from wall socket to cut standby power) the PC will wake the monitor on the next boot. If the monitor ever goes to sleep or the user presses the power button on the monitor, the screen will no boot up properly. Using the resolution changing also fixes this state.

I've initiated the return process - it took a week to get them back to me saying that this is a 2008 model of something (i send the proof of purchase, SN and Service tag in reply). Its almost like the customer service is not taking us seriously. It has been 3 months and my patience is wearing thin -

tompp21, could you please elaborate on the process you've gone through to initiate your return? We cannot risk suffering any more downtime as a result of these issues. I too will be providing a statement of my experience.
