I know. I had to ask twice just to make sure I understood correctly the date. I'm still shocked, if I'm honest. In other news my motherboard will get replaced due to issues with the GPU. So noise and GPU issues for me, what a treat. Did I mention this is my 3rd replacement ? And my second motherboard replacement overall ? I'll see how this gets going and update you guys (on the noise related issues).

And I got told yesterday a new BIOS is being tested and the fix is 2-4 weeks away and will not be a hardware fix, each reps got his own answer, I swear to god they have no clue about the issue m8.

Terry is the only rep with an answer worth listening to. Dell have sent me a new screen and palmrest + keyboard to fit myself (yes you heard me right) as I am toshiba factory trained, I do not have time off to wait for a Dell tech so they are letting me do it myself. They have said I can have a full refund should the BIOS update not correct the coil whine. Basically I am playing for time as the updated boards should have an ETA by then giving me time to wait or refund and reorder to start the ball rolling again.. as nothing else out there is quite like the dell (would never go MBP) it seems I am stuck with this for now!

Looking forwards to taking this to bits at the weekend :emotion-11:

I even have the original system to use as a guide to make sure it all goes back together the right way as I missed the collection today!

I've got the same issue! I thought I was going nuts at first. This is a replacement, as the first one arrived dead and would not even start. I'd like to try the new adapter, did that work for anyone? Even though I am older, I hear the high frequencies, my husband doesn't but his hearing is not as keen as mine is.

I am also having the same issue. I've had my XPS 15 about a month now and the coil whine has been there since receiving it. I thought maybe I could live with it but either I'm becoming more sensitive to it or the whine is becoming worse. It is completely intolerable.

ENGLISH with google translate:

Even in Italy the same problem.

My XPS 15 9530 with i7 1TB HDD.

This noise with power connected and the battery charged to 100%. If I switch to "Power Saver" the noise increases.

I tried all possible combinations and in any load condition.

If I disconnect the power cord the noise stops in all conditions.

You have to really solve this problem and contact all clients for replacement when the mainboard is running at 100%.

We await news from DELL.

2015! Please, do we look like idiots? They really want us to believe that there's some tremendous obstacle in fixing this that has taken half a year already?
If they don't fix it now, I don't believe they'll spend money and time to fix a product that has gone off the shelf by 2015. Now, they're just worried that if we expose this design defect to all potential customers, they'll suffer in sales number.
I suggest Dell make public their progress so far, showing us what they have achieve so far to fix the coil whine, if they want us to believe them that they're really doing something rather than pretending to do something. Otherwise we have every right to believe that they're just bluffing. And we should take every possible law weapon to defend customers' rights.
Manufacturing a product with defect is one thing, tricking customers into buying a product with a known detect, especially one that's a deal breaker,  without informing them ahead and hoping they won't return it because of all the obstacles in returning is another thing.

I should add that it mine makes the noise near-constantly, regardless of whether it is plugged in or not or what power setting it is using. It sometimes seems to pause or curtail for a fraction of a second when I touch the monitor, but not always.

I don't have the unit with me just now to try this but, if anormally whiney XPS were being used for voice recording, with a quality preamp and microphone recording chaing, would the noise enter into the recording or would it be excluded?

I meant "...quality preamp and microphone recording chain..."

GoNz0 I wonder would you mind telling me if you are based in the UK? I want to buy an xps 15 but the coil noise is the only thing that is stopping me from ordering it, no matter what alternatives I look at I always end up back coming back to this model. I have spoken with Dell UK sales { although based in India I think } and they say there is not a problem, and if there is they will replace the unit. Clearly there is an issue with the coil whine.... I would be interested to see if this Bios test works, also if the support team you are dealing with are UK based.. Thanks

Yes I am UK.

No they are not UK based support, they have a offshore accent that I cannot pin down, kind of an indian/US mix, It is almost like they do know but will not give a straight answer as that is admitting liability. I said that I had spoken direct via PM with a US rep who had told me they are working on a redesign and they just gave a simple "OK".

Best bet is to either wait until fixed boards are shipping and take the risk that they are not using old stock but I will put money on them using up old stock as that is dell all over, so you may as well take a punt and lodge a case if you have an issue. that way you are eligible for a refund up to the day your warranty ends, just make sure you use a credit card as I did so you have more protection.

I am waiting for more parts Tuesday but as I have already been told the new screen will be a refurb, aka a 2nd hand panel I will be having a look then phoning up for a refund, then ordering the mid tier while it's on offer so I get a new machine with a new LCD panel again as I have been told that is the only way I can have another new machine again due to the time that has passed, Dell have no issue with this, in fact they suggested it when I said machine #2 was not acceptable due to further manufacture defects due to time elapsed since initial purchase as both orders were delayed, the 1st took nearly 2 months to arrive.

This suits me, it will put nearly £500 back in my pocket and all I lose is 50% battery as I already have upgraded the 512gb SSD to a 1tb as the one dell ship cannot enable the self encrypting drive feature on win8 pro. Then I can stick a 2nd SSD in. Suits me as it spends most of it's time plugged in and is sod all use on a plane as you can't open it up on a fold down tray to see the screen due to the size of it to watch a film anyway as I found out last month :(

I have 2 sat here, ones unbearable and ones bearable, so it is hit and miss. make sure you run a screen diagnostic when you get it run the brightness to 100% with adaptive off on a white background and check for dust/fluff/fuzz/ dead pixels then reject the laptop and ask for a new one as you will get a 2nd hand screen if you allow dell to send an engineer.

Once you have a perfect screen you can sit back and wait for a mobo fix and have them come swap that as it is quite a simple job. up to you if you get the engineer to use decent thermal paste if you have your own during the swap.

Thanks for the info, I will definitely check the screen at those settings. Also insist on replacement as opposed to new screen { should there be a problem }...

That does not seem right, as you bought a brand new laptop the replacement parts should really be new themselves.... good luck with it all...
