Hello guys!

I have the same problem with 5737, any drive doesnt work in hdd caddy.
Could you please share me where did you buy your caddys from?
Mine was ordered from buy-deals.co.uk website.
I've ordered an otherone from hddcaddy.com, it will arrive next week, and I can share my experience with you about that one as well.

Anyway, some people say that this issue is on purpose, and Dell dont want to let people use this hdd caddy feature one the consumer laptops, only on the much more expensive business models. I also heared that Dell build some trick to the bios to stop working any drives on the sata port for ODD.

Mine is a generic chinese caddy from a german supplier. I don't know what the issue is tbh but I don't think it's a caddy issue.

If I put the 1TB WD drive in caddy is not even recognized in bios. If I put the 500GB Seagate works perfectly (for about 3 months now).

The other caddy has just arrived, it's from hddcaddy.com
Unfortunately it doesn't work, just like the other one.
All the same things, if I put anything into the caddy, it's not recognized by the bios.

Anybody from Dell, can you us some information, why is this issue happening???????

Does the Windows disc manager see the drive?

You cannot boot from a drive mounted in one of these caddies- so BIOS support is not needed.  If the Windows disc manager can see the drive, you can parititon it and use it for storage.

Hi Erwin,

I would need to check if its hardware or a software issue. I would suggest you to reinstall the OS on the 1TB hard drive and connect the SSD to the optical drive caddy to confirm.

Same problem for me!!

I have done these tests:

I substituted 1 tb hdd with ssd and then I installed win 8.1 (works)
if I add the hdd instead of the dvd writer the system does not work. (using optical drive caddy)

I put the hdd 1 tb to its original place (work)
if I add the ssd instead of the dvd writer the system does not work. (using optical drive caddy)

Bye

Hi to all,
I also thought it was the caddy but I have to say it is not so.
Currently I replaced the hdd toshiba 1 tb with a 120 GB Samsung SSD 840 EVO and I put in a caddy 500gb Samsung HM500JI and almost everything works fine (occasionally I have some conflict with the video driver).

So I assume that the problem is related to the use of the toshiba that creates some hardware conflict.

I hope I was helpful.
Although I do not speak English well (I used the google translator)
Good Luck!

I have a 5737

I tend to think that Harddrives work if it's less than 1TB . Not sure why though . I have a seagate 500gg he has a samsung 500gb.

But the thing is, it needs to work with 1TB HDD and not with smaller HDD

I Have a Dell 17R 5737 that I have also had problems getting a caddy to work.  On my third caddy I can get a WD 500GB drive to work but not my 1T.  It does not hot swap.  I have to put it in place and then rebut the computer to identify the drive.  Tried many different combos.  I would like to get a 1T to work but it looks like that's not going to happen.  I would like to try a 750GB as a minimum.  Has anybody tried this?

Thanks Dell for the support??

I've got a 5737, bios version A07, running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit). After multiple caddies from multiple sources..i can get the bios to see a Samsung 840 Pro and a WD750GB Black (WD750BPKX) with the Samsung in the boot slot and the WD in the caddy, but it's not recognized in Windows Disk Management. I've checked all the drives and they work, the recognition in the bios seems to indicate that its not the caddy. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
