What is the fastest processor I can use in my Dell XPS 400, DXP051 motherboard
I currently have the Intel Pentium D 2.8 Ghz processor that came with my computer in 2005. I bought an Intel Pentium D 3.4 Ghz (see info below) on ebay but I got an error message when I booted my computer saying "incompatible processor detected". Is there something that I can do to fix this? If not, what is the fastest processor that is compatible with this motherboard? And why is it so hard to find compatibility lists?

No because the VRMs on the motherboard do not support 130w cpus.

I know this question is a year old but i found a lot of info out there saying a Pentium D 960 would work, but found no one who could provide first-person post-upgrade confirmation. So ...
CONFIRMING: i just upgraded an a old XPS 400 (aka Dimension 9150) with the DXP051 motherboard to a Pentium D 960 [SL9AP]. Also added a $75 SSD (Adata SP900) and got rid of the original GPU w/Hypermemory in favor of a $30 NVIDIA w/1GB DDR3 RAM. It's obviously not a gaming rig but it runs very well for everyday use.
Only disappointment was the limitation on RAM: system only recognizes 3.5GB of the 4x1GB DDR2 PC2-6400 sticks, which i didn't notice until after I'd already installed Windows 7 x64, but it still runs great. Well worth it.
I plan to use it for a couple years until i break down and buy a new machine, at which point i may turn the XPS 400 into a Linux/TiVO recorder.

The fix for the GX620 ram disappointment is to get a Precision 380 with the copper heatsink aka the performance heatsink. Unlike the 620 the 380 supports 8 gigs total ram and shares zero ram with the chipset for video. 100 percent of the ram and cpu from the 620 can be migrated to the Precision 380. Pentium D 900 series also means that it works fine with 64 bit windows 8.1 or 10. Radeon 5750 or 7770 also makes a nice upgrade in the precision 380 because it allows full size video slot and has a 375W power supply that supports video cards that have 1 6 pin PCI-E power connection.

Intel Pentium D 950/960 advantages
The microprocessor includes Virtualization VT-X
that allows hyper-v virtualized programs.
I have seen inexpensive Pentium D's on Ebay and Amazon
SL9QQ seems to be the max for a 5150
i Can Now Confirm that this is working on a GX620 Tower.
Bios Updated to A11, 4 Gigs of Ram installed still Registers 3.50
Pentium D 820 was Replaced with Pentium D 915. DELL HH807 Motherboard Bios A11. Copper Heatsink 305W Tower.
I added a Radeon 6670 Video card. All drivers are native to windows clean install. I added directshow legacy feature and installed directx june 2010. After windows updates everything works as expected.

Hello,
I just tried to upgrade the same kind of computer with a intel pentium D 960 but the 3 4 light just stayed on... so I hade to reinstall the 2.8ghz. I have similar settings, but the psuid.com said the motherboard is
a oyc523. so I am not sure if the cpu is bad or incompatible with this system. any idea's?
