I also had the same problem with my Inspiron 5100 with a TM1400 card. I did find a solution although I still have other problems as well. Through reading this forum I found that the processor changes speeds during high load/high heat. That is when mine seemed to fade, when things started getting warm. Anyway, there is a free download on the web called "Speedswitchxp" that you set as "maxbattery" on the menu. This keeps the processor at a slower speed and now I can run without it disconnecting after 30 minutes. The connection stays at 11mbps so it doesnt seem to affect the connection speed. Also I disconnected the WEP encription, although this is probably not safe to do.
hope this helps

Hi Dave,

your right - with SpeedswitchXP the wireless connection last a bit longer. But after one hour the connection gets sluggish and then stops. The utility CPU-Cool, which is supposed to optimize the temperature, doesn't improve things ( and it isn't a utility for WinXP). It is disappointing to buy a fast Notebook just to install software to slow it down because some parts can't handle the temmperature.

I wonder if there is a Inspiron out there, whose TrueMobile1400 functions for more than 10 minutes.

I agree with you - I'd bet there isn't one out there that doesn't have this same problem.  I'm fairly certain that mine is not a heat issue (although I'll download the patch you put up) because mine happens every 2-3 minutes.  I'm having similar problems to both of you with my brand new Inspiron 8600 and the TrueMobile 1400 and a Microsoft 802.11 b/g router, so it doesn't look like Dell has gotten any better with the upgraded mini PCI 1400.  It's not the router, because my compaq works like a champ with a microsoft b/g card.  I get the same response from Dell though (see my posting on the front page of this forum from this morning.)  My connection is constantly dropping, and I can't get my key to stay in...if you've entered it the umteenth time, I've entered mine the umteenth millionth.  I'm going to try your fixes and see if they work...I've tried everything but the Windows XP update pretty much, but we'll see...THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING...if I can't get it fixed, I'm going to return the computer...I just got it last week...I refuse to spend more money and buy and external card for a machine that was suppose to come with an internal one that worked or get cornered into buying Dell's router when I see how many problems everyone has with it anyway....ugh!

And the story goes on and on... two days ago I updated the BIOS (now its Version 05) as suggested by Dell Support. Tomorrow I'll find out if it's any help at all. The next step shall be to change the PC-Card - but it can't be all the TrueMobiles1400 are having a hardware problem...

I'm still hoping for someone to tell me they have got a Inspiron 8600 with a perfectly healthy TrueMobile1400 and they are surfing the internet for 2 hours and more.

I found almost the same solution - they sent me a new TrueMobile 1400, then I had to get on the phone with Dell Wireless tech support again, but they did the EXACT same thing they had done with the previous card, and lo and behold - this time, it worked...it has been working with absolutely no glitches for a whole month now!!!  Imagine that!

Hello,

just to let everybody know: It was a hardwareproblem ..... After spending a lot of time with Dell support and after reinstalling Windows XP, I got a replacement for my WLAN-card. And guess what - now it works........
