The I8600 and the I8500 have the same chasis as the M60. The M60 has an extra USB port while the I8600 and I8500 only have 2. That cover you opened was just a piece of pastic covering a hole in your laptops side.
The port is actually referred to as the "D-Bay" port. It is a powered USB port meant for use w/ D-bay devices such as an external cd/dvd burner, etc. The plastic covering it, like the previous "poster" mentioned is cover the "hole" in the laptop.
After you broke that piece of plastic what did you do? I have same problem with missing Plastic Cover of the Redundant USB Port! and have not so far managed to do any thing to replace it.
By the way I think that the Dell Part Number is:504445762
Dell Insp 8600, 1.4 Centrino, 30 G HDD, Wireless card, Combo, 15.4 wide Screem TFT. 1 year warranity.
