I broke down and sent my smiley face screen back to Dell 2 weeks ago. It was a 5 -day turnaround (door to door, not bad!), and so far, no smiley. I have been carrying it in my bag to and from work for 1 week now.

No smiley yet... I'm surprised. Maybe this one is fixed for good? I certainly hope so.
Funny because I sat next to a guy on the train last week and he was using a 300m. I peeked over and of course, smiley was there in full force. I asked him "don't you see that stupid smiley face? isn't it annoying?". He said " no I never noticed it until now... but yes it's really annoying!" haha.
BTW: DEFINITELY send the letter. The rep I spoke with said they do actually read them and it's really the only way to get anything taken care of. The tech support department is completely helpless when it comes to customer service issues.
Sorry to hear your smiley is returning... did you have the new "shiny" screen? Or did it look just like the old one?
When they replaced mine the last time around, the new LCD screen was a bit more shiny looking. So far it's been over a month and no smiley. I'm curious if this is a new LCD that doesn't suffer from the problem.
I received my 300m laptop back from Dell's facility in Memphis, TN today. Shockingly, I gave it to DHL Monday at Noon and it received it, completely fixed at 11AM today (Wednesday) in NYC. That kind of turn around time almost makes the two hours I spent on the phone with "Pamela" and "Dennis" in Bangalore, India worth it.
As usual they replaced the LCD which no longer has the smiley face. I agree with the previous comments the the assembly looks different (a more curved upper lip), hopefully not prone to smiley reoccurrences. They also replaced the top cover of the laptop (back of the LCD). I am thrilled with this because my original cover was filled with scratches. Having a clean slate greatly increases the resale value (I plan to buy a slip-case for the machine to keep it in pristine condition this time). They also said that they upgraded my BIOS, hopefully that will also prevent the smiley face contrast issues.
Ironically, next spring semester I will be going to Bangalore (then China and New Zealand) as part of a three city Urban Affairs study abroad program (I am a Junior in College). Perhaps I will be able to see a side of the outsourcing situation other than resentment and frustration.
Let's keep each other in the loop if the screen contrast issues reoccur.
I got the 1st screen replaced in late June, the smiley came back in 2 weeks.
Just sent it in and got it back for 2nd replacement, very quick 3 day door-to-door.
Any new updates fellas? Charles?
My warranty ends on 9/26, should I pay ~$200 to extend it for 2 more years?!?!!?

No smiley here... this last repair seems to have held up. I wouldn't sink any more money into this thing. It's really up to you. If you have a lot invested in it, maybe the $200 is worth it in case the smiley comes back.
so there is no solution to this problem? i have an x300 and also have that white happyface of death. i just spoke to dell support, and they are mailing me a new LCD - but i have to replace it myself, or else pay the min 200 dollars to have them do it for me! brutal. i can only hope they send the entire lid assembly and not only an lcd. i had no idea the problem was so wide spread until i started reading the forums.
is there any way to prevent this problem? now that i know this problem is everywhere, i am going to insist they repair my DEFECTIVE notebook. i mean, common.

I got my X300 screen replaced a couple of months ago and the replacement is so far showing a 'left eye' and faint smiley face. So I'll get on to them to get the screen replaced. Either this issue hasn't been fixed or I got a pre-fix replacement.

Why hasn't Dell support respond to this?
I just got my 300M. I hope nothing bad will happen.
