Thanks for the reply. I actually reinstalled Windows then the drivers and everything but it still isn't working. When I run Backtrack Linux it tells me an audio device was removed when it starts up. Could it have been physically disconnected? Is there a way to check it is physically connected to the motherboard without opening it up?
I tried running dxdiag command for info, please see it here:

> System recovery. This is the gold standard for determining audio hardware failure.
In cases where a system recovery is not possible, re-installing Windows is a 2nd choice. The audio should be tested before allowing any Windows updates. Only minimal drivers needed for functioning (if any) should be installed prior to the test. Windows 7 has its own audio driver and does not require the IDT driver to be installed for testing the audio.
If still no audio from speakers or headphones then assume hardware failure. There is no way that I know of to inspect the motherboard without opening the case. It seems to me more likely that the chip has failed than become disconnected, but one can only guess.
In a situation where there is no audio from either the speakers or headphone jack and hardware failure has been determined, I don't know of a way to pin down the exact point of failure. Perhaps a motherboard technician would be able to.
PS check your BIOS settings. I don't know what settings are available in the BIOS for your model, but in any case re-installing Windows does not fix any potential BIOS mis-configuration. However most Dell laptop BIOS do not have a setting to disable audio anyway.
Thanks, I actually already tried the ePSA tests and there is no audio there at all including system beeps. No sounds from either the speakers or headphone jack, Windows indicates it is playing the sounds though. I guess I have to chalk this one up to a motherboard circuit failure, I would open it up and try to identify the damaged transistor and resolder a new one but it will be a lot easier for me to just buy a USB sound card and use that since this laptop has 4 USB slots.
I am actually currently using teamviewer to stream the video and audio out to my iphone and both work perfectly except maybe a 200-500ms small latency. This seems to be working much better than Airfoil over wifi for some reason and I will probably just stick with this for now but it still has me baffled, doesn't this imply that the sound card is working since it must be processing the sound which is being transmitted to Airfoil or Teamviewer before it gets sent over to my iphone or android tablet? (I could be wrong...)
The only thing that has me confused is that I am able to play audio if I stream it over wifi through programs like Airfoil so it has me thinking the sound card does work but is not transmitting anything to the audio output jack or the speakers.
doesn't this imply that the sound card is working since it must be processing the sound which is being transmitted to Airfoil or Teamviewer
I am not familiar with those devices or programs but in general when you wirelessly send audio to an external audio device you are sending digital files, not sound. Any external audio device has a DAC (digital audio converter) that replaces the DAC of the laptop's audio hardware. So different hardware is doing the actual work of producing sound.

Two other tests you can run are:
> ePSA, but note that ePSA only tests the functioning of the speakers, not the audio chipset.

Thanks for the help though.
