Explain in detail how the S2240T is connected to the XPS 8700. Specifically what ports and what cabling on both. Does the XPS 8700 have an added discrete video card or just the onboard video? If discrete, what specific video card?
The monitor is connected by a USB cord and, I believe, a VGA cord. These came with the monitor. (The monitor was purchased from the Dell Outlet and actually came with 2-3 different cords to choose from.) The computer has a Nvidia GeForce GT 635 video card (It is what came with the computer; I didn't add anything different.).
I tried changing settings on the monitor so it would not go into sleep mode, and it worked for one day, but my husband said this morning he had to turn the computer off and on again to get it to work.
What operating system is running? Does the GeForce GT 635 video card have a white DVI slot on it? Did you receive a DVI to DVI cable? If yes to both, turn the monitor and computer off. Disconnect the VGA cable from both. Connect the DVI to DVI cable to both. Turn the monitor on then the computer.
The operating system is WIndows 8.1. I do have a DVI cable. I have connected it as you suggested. When I turned the computer back on, it came on correctly with no issues. Hopefully, it will do so in the morning as well. If so, I will return and mark the problem solved.
I do not believe that this is a monitor issue. To test that, can you test this monitor on another computer?
For this computer, you will have to look into the operating system power management to find what is causing this to occur.
* Click Start * Enter power * Click Power Options * For the one you have selected, click "Change plan settings" * Click "Change advanced power settings" * Open USB settings * USB selective suspend setting * Change to Disabled * Open PCI Express, Link State Power Management * Set all to Off * Click Apply- OK
* Bring up the Power User Menu with your keyboard by pressing the WIN (Windows) key and the X key together * Open the Device Manager
* Open Keyboards * Right click the device * Left Click Properties * Left click Power Management * Remove the check from "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" * Be sure "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" is checked * Click OK
* Open Mice and other pointing devices * Right click the device * Left Click Properties * Left click Power Management * Remove the check from "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" * Be sure "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" is checked * Click OK
* Open Network adaptors * Right click each device one at a time * Left Click Properties * Left click Power Management (some will not have this tab. skip them) * Remove all checks * Click OK
* Open Universal Serial Bus controllers * Right click each device one at a time * Left Click Properties * Left click Power Management (some will not have this tab. skip them) * Remove the check from "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" * Be sure "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" is checked * Click OK
This did not solve the problem. My husband said the same thing happened this morning when he turned it on--it said it was going into power saver mode and went black, so that he had to turn off the computer by holding down the power button and then turn it on again.
I did everything you said to do, but it didn't help. This morning I was up first and started up the computer. Just as it does for my husband, a message came on the monitor saying it was entering power saver mode, and the screen went black. The little light that shows power is on for the monitor began dimming and alternating dim and bright. I moved the mouse, clicked on a number of different keys on the keyboard, turned the monitor off and on. No change. I had to hold down the power button on the computer to turn it off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on. On the second try, everything came on correctly. However, I doubt it is good to be turning the computer off this way every morning.
When I click the Restart icon, it starts to shut down--the screen goes black and then the message "entering power saver mode" (with the monitor model #) comes on. The On light on the monitor fades in and out. The computer's On light is on, but the monitor will not come back on until I hold the computer button down to turn it off and then turn it back on again.
When I turn the computer off via pressing Shut down icon, again the message "entering power saver mode" comes on and the monitor On light fades in and out. I have to turn the computer on, then off, then on again to get the monitor to come to life.
This seems to be getting worse, as I used to be able to Restart without an issue or turn it off when warm without a problem turning it back on. If it gets where I can't turn it on at all, I am in real trouble, as my job is done on this computer, and this is a busy time of year for me.
Thanks for trying to help. I await your further instructions.
We have not yet tried a different monitor because, for unknown reasons, the computer and monitor have started up correctly the past two mornings. The day I turned it on, it still said "Entering power saver mode," but it didn't.
However, we had a new glitch this morning. When my husband turned it on, it started to go to my account (as I am the primary account), but my account would not open. Instead I got a "guest account" with none of my apps or documents or anything--only four basic things on the start page. It gave an error message about my account not being available or something, then said to sign out and sign back in later. I did so, and my account appeared then. Whew!
I will keep watching to see if the sleep mode issue recurs. We did not make any changes between the time it didn't work and the time it did, so I have no idea what is going on.
I attached our old monitor and did a restart. The same thing happened, although evidenced in a slightly different way with the older monitor. The monitor said no signal was being received and went into standby, as shown by the yellow, rather than green, light on the On switch. I turned the monitor off and back on and again got the no signal message. As with the other monitor, I had to hold down the power button on the computer to turn it off, then turn it back on again, and then it started up all right.
So now that we know it's not the monitor, what's the next step? The computer was just purchased in late November and set up in January. (purchased directly from Dell Online)
Contact Dell Technical Support. Explain the troubleshooting we have done. Tell them that they should setup an onsite service to replace the video card.
My setup is only slightly different: Dell xps8700, S2240T monitor, Nvidia GeForce GT 720, Win 8.1, standard-issue graphics, video, sound, etc. I guess I can run through all the time-consuming steps outlined below ... and will see what happens.
Must say, this PC-monitor relationship was already troublesome from the time I set up the computer yesterday. Connected everything, turned on the monitor and PC and ... nothing. Blackscreen. At least two hours worth as I re-checked all connected, plugged and unplugged, turned things on and off. Suddenly it came on and allowed me to register. But left on overnight, it comes up with "entering powersaving mode".

To me, this sounds like the computer video card is acting up, not the monitor. To verify this, is there another monitor you can test on the XPS 8700?

I just tried restarting it, and it did the power saver glitch again. We will try another monitor and report back.

I've got the same, or very similar, problem.
