The problem is probably either in the hardware or the audio driver. There is no direct test for the hardware, so you should test the driver.
To test the driver, try using a different driver to see if you get the same symptoms. If you get the same symptoms when using a different driver then probably the problem is in the hardware.
The Inspiron 15R 5521 can use either a Realtek audio driver or the Windows native (default) audio driver. To find out which driver you are using now, open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc into the search box and then hit Enter), then expand the Sound...Controllers category.
Look for either "Realtek High Definition Audio" or "High Definition Audio Device" (the native driver. Whichever one you have now, install the other one.
Let me know which one you find and which operating system you have, and I will get back to you with some instructions.
If it does it also with the Windows native audio driver then it is probably the hardware,
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the search box and hit Enter) and right click on Realtek High Definition Audio. 2. Select to "Update Driver Software". 3. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software". 4. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer". 5. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked. 6. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio". 7. Click "Next". 8. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
You don't need to restart the laptop unless prompted to do so. "High Definition Audio" is the native audio driver.
That driver works in other Inspiron 5521's. If you have the same problems even with that driver, all I know to suggest is to keep using the native driver or to perform a system recovery.
If even system recovery does not fix it then contact tech support if still under warranty.

Yes, the Realtek driver. You could try getting one directly from the Realtek site.
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
On the page click on "High Definition Audio Codecs".
Check "I accept" and then "next".

Install the native audio driver again, then install the Realtek 6.0.1.6690 driver.
That driver works in other Inspiron 5521's. If you have the same problems even with that driver, all I know to suggest is to keep using the native driver or to perform a system recovery.
