LCD could be on the verge of failing or it might be a cable issue. I would suggest you to try reseating the lcd cable. You can find the manuals here http://dell.to/1n5lDxb
8 beeps indicate LCD failure. I would recommend you to get the lcd replaced. Please private message me the service tag if your system is under warranty to assist you further.
Thanks for the reply Shrikanth! No, the warranty has expired (service tag no.<ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed as per privacy policy>). I could make out its an lcd problem but why does it come on after connecting to an external monitor after which I can disconnect the external and work on the lcd? Can there be a problem with the video card?
