Inspirion laptop will not boot/load. Hargrove clicking noise

Question

I have a Inspirion N5050 laptop. A few weeks ago, it started running slow and Adchoices ads appeared. I removed them. I ran a scan using AVG, which detected nothing. I shut down the laptop as a precaution. Now it will not load Windows. I press the power button, the dell logo appears, then I hear what I think is the hard drive click, then the screen goes dark for a second, then the logo and a click and so on and so on.  I am able to get to the menus with f2 and f12, but I have no idea what to do next. Safe mode will not respond ( I cannot get into it). Any ideas?

The hard drive is toast -- to confirm, run an extended diagnostic on the drive (F12 at powerup).

Ran a thorough diagnostic. It says every thing passed. Can a virus do this? I updated AVG and did a scan right before it started doing this.  Any suggestion you have is appreciated.
