Hey in order to run at native resolution you need to hold down the option key and then select Scaled and you will see the additional resolutions that you can pick from which includes the native 4K resolution. That's what I had to do with my external monitor in order to use it at native resolution.

I think with that Mac your only option is either native rez or 1080 scaled.
