Then I end up installing it again (the latest driver available is from March 2011 and for Windows 7 by the way)

Hello. Regarding audio, Dell only supports Ubuntu, XP, Vista and 7 on the Latitude E5520, so I suppose you are using the 7 version in compatibility mode? Maybe you could try the other ones. All of the drivers are listed on one page here.

Or post a request in this thread, where you can ask our unsupported systems expert if he knows of a Win 8.1 driver for a a different model that will work on the E5520.

Or if you end up having to use to the Windows native driver, maybe a usb mic would be a workaround solution..

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes, I am using the Windows 7 driver. The other drivers do not work at all unfortunately.

I will try to ask in the thread. Maybe the issue that sounds suddenly stops working on Windows 8.1 is not driver related at all?

There was a Windows 8 issue that stemmed from a July Microsoft update that kept cutting off the audio, but it did not affect 8.1 and I have not heard of anything like that with 8.1. You could try performing a system recovery and see if it fixes the issue, but if everything is working okay with the Windows native driver then it does point to a problem with using the Win 7 IDT driver.

Last time someone asked about the driver, I struggled to find a driver for the HD92. You can try the drivers from the next model up the 5530 for the HD93 but I don't think they will work:
