U2312HM DP in to Surface Pro 3 mDP out

Question

Hi, I recently purchased a Surface Pro 3 and want to be able to connect it to my Dell U2312HM. I purchased a Mini Displayport -> HDMI adapter from the Surface Pro and a HDMI - > Displayport (into the U2312HM) however i get no signal. From a few other posts i'm guessing it doesn't like HDMI into the equation? I want to use the Displayport on the monitor as the DVI is currently occupied by my Latitude. What is the best way to do this if what i have doesn't work? Thanks

The U2312HM has DP in. The Surface Pro 3 has mDP out. HDMI should not enter the equation? SP3 mDP out --> mDP to DP cable --> U2312HM DP in

I was unable to find an mDp to Dp adapter at any store in my local area so i purchased that combination as it was the only way to get from mDp to Dp. Have since found and purchased a mDp to Dp so will see how that goes.

Is there a technical reason the combination i currently have wouldn't work?

In any configuration, HDMI cannot upconvert to DP via a simple cable or adapter. You would need a high end active converter.
