I am having this same weird problem with my Dell 3147. It is getting worse. The computer operates normally but after an overnight or even hour-long shut-down I have to play all kinds of games with the power button to get the machine to boot.
Lately I have to press and hold the power button for about 15 secs. It has to go thru the entire reboot process. Simply waking from Sleep mode is possible only if the computer has just recently been operating.
Like you, I've changed power settings every way I can think of--mainly to say "when I press power button, do nothing" because I do not want the machine to go into sleep mode when actually I'm pressing power button to TURN IT ON.
Ideas please? I'm still under warranty for a couple months but it's already been back three times!
It appears that you have the same problem and needs a motherboard change. I would suggest calling them and asking for in home warranty service. That way you can have it checked in front of you and also make sure they change the motherboard. After I had the m/b changed at home, I did not run into further issues. However I did end up selling the system after a few months.
If you purchased an in-home upgrade warranty, it'll be simple -- start by calling Dell Support. If you have a base warranty but want on-site service, you'll need to call and purchase a warranty upgrade before that will be considered. Adding on-site service to a system already shipped is more expensive than it is at the time of purchase, though.

I guess it will depend on what kind of warranty you have. You can check that at dell.com/support by entering your service tag#.
But act fast as long as you have some warranty. Even if you need to mail it in, I think it should be fine.
