Inspiron 3520 - 7 beeps on startup

Inspiron 3520 - just out of warranty. Black screen on startup, with 7 beeps, repeated.

I understand that this beep code signifies a CPU/motherboard error - has reseating the CPU worked for anyone with this error, or is doing so pointless?

No, reseating the CPU doesn't work since the problem is with solder joints on the motherboard and requires either reflowing the solder on the affected chip or replacing the motherboard, both of which will cost more than an out-of-warranty 3520 is worth.

This is caused by a manufacturing fault so I believe you may have some recourse under the Sale of Goods Act if you are in the UK even if it is out of warranty.

Hello

I have tried the technique you suggested, but am still getting the black screen & 7 beeps.

I am in the United Kingdom, if you would like to advise me of repair charge.

Hi mcgrant,

I suggest that you shut the system down, remove the battery and disconnect the ac adapter, press and hold the power button for 20 to 30 seconds. Now connect only the ac adapter and wait for 30 seconds and turn on the system. This will drain any residual charge in the capacitors.

If the system still starts up with black screen & 7 beeps, then as you suspected it is motherboard failure. If you let us know the region you belong, I will check the options to get the system repaired for a charge.

Hi mcgrant,

As suspected earlier, it is a motherboard failure. Please send me private message with the service tag, the name it is purchased in. phone # & best time to call. I will arrange a call back from the sales team.

For the benefit of anyone with the same problem, Dell quoted a cost of £212 to repair this laptop, which I found completely derisory. For that money I could buy a far better quality refurbished laptop with a better spec....

Seven beeps is an indication of poor soldering on the motherboard and there is no cheap solution.

Dell quoted me a cost of £212 two years ago.
