Hi samuel120607,

I would suggest you to update the BIOS on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.

In addition, I would suggest that you run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned in the video below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.

Please let me know the findings.

Hi,

I updated to the latest bios as suggested. Same issue exists. Diagnostics reveals no faults.

How I have to repair this situation at the moment is to take out the battery so that the laptop is powered ONLY by the AC adapter. Turn on. Since no battery exists, it allows the computer to boot. Then I pop the battery back in.

This is unacceptable use in long run. This means I will always need to AC adapter when the room is cold, which has not always been the case causing inability to use a perfectly usable laptop.

Please let me know how I can disable this BIOS check.

Thank you.

How cold is it? Does it work OK if you operate in a warmer room?   If it still doesn't work in a warmer room, contact Dell. You should also do a web or Dell search for the issue. There have been a number of complaints about this recently with various laptops.

Perhaps about 45F. Basically, once this happens, it continues to lock up on the error message. The only way I have been able to get it out of this lock is to remove the battery, and while on AC power, turn on system. Once it boots to Windows (past the chance of error message), I plug the battery back in.... then things work fine.

Please tell me where on the web there is a solution. Also, I thought this was a way I can contact Dell. No?

How does Dell define contact? Is it sufficient through email? chat? phone? -- but not through community posting?

Thank you.

Sorry to hyjack the thread but I have this same problem on three laptops bought from Dell in November last year.  Do you have an answer Mr Dell is this a faulty batch of battery's??

Answers please!

This site is manned by volunteers to try to assist users, not Dell staff. Go to the Dell site and find the number to call for technical assistance, or better, use the Dell Chat line. The chat line info is found here:

What happens after you replace the battery and then unplug the power cord? Does it continue to run? This is most likely because of the low temperatures considerably reducing battery output.

what worked for me was to unplug the battery, depress the power button for 40+ seconds, plug in power adapter, start up, shut down, unplug power adapter, depress the power button for 40+ seconds, plug in the battery, plug in the power adapter, start up, and bingo!  No battery error and battery charging once more (for now).

I've read elsewhere that holding down the power button while all other power sources are disconnected clears any residual charge in the various components.

The main thing this does is erase the BIOS settings that have been changed and rewrite the default settings into CMOS. This operation actually cures problems resulting from intentional or accidental or who knows what changes to the CMOS, which were harmful. Many times, it can fix a system that refuses to boot. I have seen brand new computers that would not boot till the CMOS RAM was erased. When you do this, remember that any BIOS changes you have made are now gone and you need to make them again.

Not an answer.

This is the message I get when I enter SERVICE TAG:

"Cannot continue. The application is improperly formatted. Contact the application vendor for assistance"
