I would suggest you to reinstall the Video card driver on the system to fix the issue with the sleep mode.
Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the video card driver from Video section onto the system and install it.
Hi Ravi, thank you for the suggestion. I reinstalled both the AMD Radeon drivers, and Intel HD graphics drivers, one at a time and retested after each one, and neither update fixed the issue. Open to next steps? Thank You
Sorry for the delayed response. I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the video card driver from Dell website as these drivers are tested on the Dell system. Please follow the steps mentioned below to uninstall the video card.
Open the charms bar by moving the mouse to right top corner of the screen and in the search box, Start typing devmgmt.msc and then press enter.
Select the Display adapters listed and right click on it.
Now select properties.
In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.
5Check “Delete the driver software for this device.”
You want to delete the driver click OK.
After the uninstall finishes restart the system. Then reinstall the Intel video card driver first and then AMD card driveron the system for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link above, select the OS, then download the video card drivers from Video section onto the system and install it.
I can wake the computer just fine with my Wireless Mouse and Keyboard, but only as long as the lid is open.
When the lid is closed, it simply will not work...
When computer is put to sleep with lid closed, the laptop apparently turns off power to the USB ports, thus disabling the ability to wake the computer from any USB devices that are plugged into them.
I concur that this must be a BIOS issue.
Not all models of Dell Laptops have this issue, therefore I must believe that this issue can be fixed with a BIOS update.
I have the i5548-6170SLV
This particular model does not have the AMD video card built in, but has Intel HD Graphics 5500, which is built into the Core i5 CPU. As suggested here, I have tried uninstalling the video drivers, making sure to check that "Delete install files" option. I have tried many different versions of the HD graphics driver, with no luck.
Many of us like to hook our laptops up to an external Monitor or TV, and it is necessary to close the lid to protect the laptop. And the ability to put the computer to sleep, and then wake it back up while the lid is closed is a very necessary function that seems to be missing from this model.
DELL, please, please, please fix this issue and release a new BIOS so that we can function properly.
P.S. Decided not to wait for Dell to fix this issue. Sent it back. I suggest that Dell gets this issue sorted out on this model and on future models.

Same issue here with a older( end of 2013) Inspiron 3537, out of warranty, out of luck!
Dell support team suggested to spend more money in support , instead of fixing the BIOS.
Dell, If you are a decent company and you want the customers coming back for new products , please fix this BIOS issue , disregarding warranty...
