RE: 5) Install the ATI driver for Win2K ( not approved by Dell :-D )
Can you post the download link or point me to the type of the driver. They do not provide a mobility driver and they point you to DELL's website. I've tried the generic radeon driver (wxp-w2k-catalyst-7-91-030625a-010027c-efg.exe) and did not work.
Confirm 5150,Win 2k, and it works like a champ. One thing still bothers me.
When I check in the display control panel it reports as having 32 Mb instead of 64 Mb.
yes they did, but a user informed us of the actual fix, not Dell. This is a big customer support loss for Dell, having a user find a fix for something Dell doesn't apparently consider a problem.
either Dell didn't know this BIOS would fix the problem, or they didn't care enough to tell us the fix themselves. You were there for all those other threads about this issue somms, you know this issue has been around for months but Dell has been indifferent about it, at least to us users anyway. Rance himself said that Dell's stance was that they didn't know when they were going to fix it, assuming they even cared to fix it at all. They have shown repeatedly that they apparently don't give a d*mn at all if we can use W2K on their newer Inspirons despite user protest
I was a little confused by the directions at first too. I initially went out to ATI's website and downloaded the catalyst driver too. but after reading the entire thread, I found out that wasn't right.
but what worked for me is this:
Flash the bios, install the XP driver provided by Dell even though it gives you errors, then after that, manually update the driver using the INF file in the Dell-provided drivers. then reboot and viola!
But one question remains: Will Dell keep this solution for themselves or will they advertise it?
Many of us thought about returning their system or have done it. And many more have bought a 5100 without being able to install Win2k since the "Going Mad!" thread. Will they get this info from the Dell reps, or Dell's website?
Many thanks to the ones that did not let this go and kept trying. United we stand...

This really works! Thanks a lot.
To bad Dell doesn't provide this solution directly....
Thanks again on behalf of all Inspiron 5150 users

Point to C2_10470.inf during installation for the W2K driver.

Lesson for Dell:
If you guys won't help us, someone else eventually will.
way to go JPP I'll try this out on our 5100s as soon as possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Dell develop this A23 BIOS fix that has allowed Win2K to run with proper video driver support?

Uhm folks, Correct me if I am wrong here please......
Story is as follows: first flash bios, then Instull the XP video driver in W2K and then it is suppossed to work?
Or do I have to download a special ATI driver for W2K, and if yes, then where?
Will this also work on my inspiron 5100 with ATI radeon 7500?
tnks for respons in advance, because I am rather fed up with this laptop not running W2K properly
