Richard, and others,

Because this is not a Dell tested solution, Dell will not be advertising this solution.  A phone or email technician who knows about this solution might point a customer to the forum to find it, as I will do when others post this question.

Dell does not support Windows 2000 on the Inspiron 1100, 5100 or 5150.  Dell will not officially tell people to install Windows 2000, or help them with the installation, or finding the necessary drivers.

Other Dell portable systems are available with Windows 2000, though I am not sure for how much longer.  Customers calling to purchase systems, who inform the salesman that they require Windows 2000 should be steered towards those systems which Dell sells with Windows 2000.  Customers who know that they need Windows 2000 should purchase systems with Windows 2000, rather than assuming that Dell will support them in the installation of another Operating System.

I now expect an inferno of flames complaining about Dell overcharging for Latitudes (when in fact they are fairly competitively priced)...

just as long as you pass it along to the bigwigs that there are a lot of users out there that find it unbelievable that Dell won't support 2K on those systems.  We expect this kind of behavior from Microsoft, Rollie, not Dell.

You said it wasn't a Dell tested solution,  the question is,  why isn't it?  I think the uproar about this issue has clearly demonstrated that there is still a high demand for W2K, why isn't Dell supplying it?

This really works! Thanks a lot.

To bad Dell doesn't provide this solution directly....

Thanks again on behalf of all Inspiron 5150 users

Does anyone have a problem with screen redrawing?
Sometimes when I move windows on the screan is not clearing properly and I get small blue dots. I can't test under WinXP since I've blow it away. It's dual boot with Suse 8.2 and same problem there.

Thanks,
Dimitrie

It seems my redraw problem was hardware. I've finally got the errors with Dell Diagnostics.
I have returned the machine for repairs. My 2 cents is that it was overheating.

1) I see they've switched to nVidia GeForce for 5150. I wonder why?
2) Has anyone got his 5150 with nVidia and Windows 2000?

Thanks,
Dimitrie

Hey!
Please help me! I have an inspiron 8500 with a radeon mobility 9000, and after formatting and installing windows XP pro, I can't install the driver. When I install the driver, the screen just goes all black like you said it did for you in win2k.

Please let me know if you know what I can do. I really need to fix this.

Best regards // Peter Stefansson

Since Dell supports XP on the 8500s, there shouldn't be any problems with the video...try making sure you have the right driver, if not..call Dell,  at least you'll get help with that issue..unlike those of us who brazenly want W2K  (we're such rebels you know)

have you checked your BIOS?  make sure its current.

if you're going to use Dell support, I'd call them up direct, so you can talk to flesh and blood people, instead of that automated script they try and make you do when you try email support.  Tech support has to assume that the people that contact them are completely and totally computer illiterate so there is always this period where they try to give you some basic newbie troubleshooting that you've already gone beyond and you actually have to sorta prove to them that you actually know something about computers.  and since you did the e-mail route..going through that process will take forever....better to just use phone if you can.

Even Dell has a little disclaimer when you go through e-mail support that it is not the way to go if you want fast support.  email support is only for low priority stuff, since they probably get more email than anything and it takes forever to go through it all.

great support... NOT

I just got their reply (after 3 or 4 days) which was to try with the drivers I got on the CD that came with the laptop (which I stated in my first email that I had already done). Their second solution was to download and try with the new drivers which they linked me to (which I stated in my first email that I had already done).

WTF. Can this "support" get any worse?

Has anyone managed to get their Inspiron 5150 with nVidia to work with Windows 2000? I have just today received my laptop and the first thing that i need to do is to install Windows 2000 Server so i can install all the business software that i need to run. I am really dismayed that this maybe not be possible and if it is not, i will have no choice but to return the software.

I have nVidia GeForce Fx Go5200 with 32Mb RAM
