Thanks for the reply, Brandon! Could you please elaborate on this a bit? Can a firmware update/downgrade cause this? Why? I'm not using the optical drive much too often these days and I can always connect an external USB one if needed, but I am intrigued by the fact that upgrading the firmware of an optical drive officially posted on the manufacturer's site led me into such havoc.

I do not think there is anything to do unfortunately. You can probably find a cheap optical drive for that laptop on eBay if you wanted to replace it.

Unfortunately, I ran into the same problem with my SH-216DB today. I'm not having any luck so far.
