What type of connection are you using? DVI? VGA?

Using a USB-to-VGA on the Laptop side, and VGA on the Monitor Side.
I just ordered a HDMI-to-DVI cable from Amazon, a couple minutes ago as 'Plan-B'.

The monitor won't need a driver - but the USB to VGA adapter does. Is it recognized by the system?

Well, I'm not sure. Good question. How can I find out?
When you plug it into the system, you should see it recognized and a driver loading - either in the system tray or in the device manager. If you do not, check with its manufacturer to find out whether it has a Windows 8 driver for download.
