Apple support says there should be an Dell driver to instruct the Mac how to treat this audio device including volume control. * They are incorrect. We do not offer any apple support. There are no volume controls in the monitor. They are part of the operating system
* Go to the U2715H driver page * Change the operating system. No apple in the list
* Go to the U2715H manuals * Open the Dell U2715H User’s Guide * I did a ctrl-f search for apple. 0 results * The only reference I see for the audio out port is that you should not use headphones in it
* Check the apple Discussions Forum and see if they can offer some apple OS audio help
A device driver is running on the Windows/Mac computer instructing it how to treat the monitor hardware properly.
Dell provides such drivers for windows platforms as such they are expected to provide drivers for the Mac as well so that the Mac will be able to ascertain how to manage the monitor hosted audio device.
I wish that you escalate that or provide contact information for follow up with relevant team in Dell.
"as such they are expected to provide drivers for the Mac" Since we are not going to test/validate on apple proprietary hardware and software, we are not going to write drivers/software for it.

Chris
A device driver is the element that describe the actual hardware to the operating system.
As soon as there is one the operating system indeed knows how to control the volume.
For now it does not know a thing that is why the volume "knob" is display in a washed color meaning it is unable to control it.
It feels bad that I am pointed back and forth between two major vendors.
Can you please escalate that ?
Thank you

No point in escalating. The displays team will simply state, "We are not going to test apple proprietary hardware and software on this monitor.".

It seems as if we are not in sync at all.
