I would also be interested in the answer. I am about to buy an E7450 with GT 840m graphics and would avoid using the IGP for longer plugged-in sessions. Optimus is just an invitation for trouble :(.
I am trying to run a multimonitor scenario and having trouble. 1 + 3 external on the E7450 w/ GT 840M. Your answer about the Intel GPU makes me think this will not be a supported scenario. I am able to see all of the displays in Control Panel, as well as in NVIDIA control panel, but not enable the 1+3 scenario.

The answer is no - it doesn't. This is a software-controlled hybrid system.
Only the Intel GPU is connected to the screen - it always remains primary.
