I'm also experiencing this issue. When I shut down the screen goes black and there's heat still being generated by the cpu. When the computer is left for long periods or folded this is the same case, but when its woken from sleep the screen remains black and the pc does not come on even with power button. I have to hold the power button down to force it off and then start the pc 2 or 3 times over for anything to show on my screen (the boot process)

Same laptop (3542), windows 10 64bit all drivers updated through dell's website including the bios.

Maybe the bios update is causing the issue.

Please provide advice or suggestions on the matter.

here is a copy of the post i made before, suffered the same as u both.. solved the problem..

same laptop, with serious power problem..

after the windows 10 upgrade, then all the drivers from Dell for win 10

machine not shutting down all the way, not able to get out of sleep mode, etc, etc..

then i removed the following, which came with the win 10 drivers from dell

this was the problem

Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver View details
Serial-ATA_Driver_379P3_WN32_14.5.0.1081_A00.EXE | Update Package for Microsoft® Windows®(41 MB)
Serial ATA|
Release date 30 Jul 2015
|Last Updated 31 Jul 2015

remove the Intel Rapid Storage stuff..

there are (i think) 3 things to uninstall

can do from control panel (all from the Intel update drivers stuff)

intel rapid storage

intel management (something like that)

intel security assist

that solve all my power problems.. win 10 still got some bugs, but removing those got rid of the serious stuff.

also some times when laptop wont start from a simple push of the power button. press and hold the power button down for a ten count.. clears something or other up, then usually a simple press will start the machine

I had this same issue.Resolved by preventing Intel(R) Managment Engine interafce access to turn off the device. You can disable this access in device manager

Go to Device manger > System Devices > Intel(R) Managment Engine interafce > Properties > Power Management > uncheck the option : Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

Hi Anand_vis,

Thank you so very much! After implementing your solution i resolved the insomnia issue which prevented me from upgrading my Dell Inspiron 3542 laptop to win10.

The problematic driver versions of the Intel(R) Managment Engine were the 11.0.0.1157_A00 and 11.0.0.1153_A00 version.

I even disabled hybrid shutdown in order to allow faster shutdown...but it still took a lot of time...i have just uninstalled intel mgt from ctrl panel...hope its solved now. very poor job from dell to make win10 experience better....

Update: Problem still persists. im running win10 education. all intel programs except graphics driver are uninstalled...yet it doesnt shutdown properly. after 5 miutes its still runing with black screen i have to force shutdown always. what more can i do? i already have latest bios drivers

Hi Eziokiller47,

Dell's final solution to the problem in question is the following update:

Application for Intel Haswell ME FW v9.5.55.1948

This update solved my insomnia problem to a 3542 dell inspiron laptop running windows 10 64-bit.

In order to be sure i made a clean reinstall of win 10 and after applying the aforementioned update i got rid of the insomnia issue permanently.

But this update is for inspiron 3442/3446.

Hi Eziokiller47,

Have a look at the official site of Dell for Inspiron 3542 drivers, you will find the aforementioned update at the Chapter called "Firmware":

www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/inspiron-15-3542-laptop/drivers/advanced

Hi I had the same issue in my Dell laptop after upgrading to win 10. I called the support line and followed lot of trouble shooting and nothing changed. I also tried many online steps and still nothing got fixed. At last one tech from escalation team guided me to update the  firmware of the laptop and BIOS to the latest version. I did that and now the laptop is working fine. It is shutting down properly when I say it to shut down.

Updated to Windows 10 Anniversary Update (August 2016) and it re-checked the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".  The problem returned until I followed your advice and unchecked the option again!

Thanks for finding this solution!!
