I'm not having the same issues as everyone else are having regarding the audio problems. BUT I'm still having unwanted noise plugging my earphones or plugging speakers. The sound is terrible. It's muffed on low volume and is completely distorted as soon as I put the volume up. I'm also hearing a hissing sound all the time. I'm frustrated since I haven't got a response nor a fix yet. I did all the latest updates and Bios flash and it's still doing the same thing. I have no problems with the internal speakers or if I connect my earphones via bluetooth. I borrowed wireless bluetooth speakers and that too has no problems. It's got to be the jack. Well I'm not giving up just yet but Dell has to do something soon. I would like to use my wired speakers.

Is there anyone else having this problem

I have the same problem. Here's the steps I took to fix the issue on my computer (no guarantees this works for everyone!)

1. Updated audio drivers to latest (Audio_Driver_37Y88_WN32_6.0.1.7628_A03.EXE)

2. Updated BIOS to latest (XPS_9550_1.1.19.exe)

3. Restart

4. Open the startup manager(Esc+Shift+Ctrl, navigate to startup tab)

5. Disable "HD Audio Background Process" and "Waves MAXXaudio Service Application"

6. Enable "Realtek HD Audio Manager" if not already enabled

7. Restart

After restarting plugging and unplugging headphones work correctly. Hope this helps!

I had the same problem, and the suggested answered didn't work for me.  What did work for me was to uninstall the current drivers (A03) and install the older A01 driver. With the older driver I can switch back and forth between speakers and headphones with no problems.

It may be important to note that I did update my firmware to the latest version, but that did not seem to fix any issues with the software I had installed.

Same problem - exactly. This is outrageous. I'm getting this unit replaced, hoping the replacement doesn't have such elementary problems. As another user said: 2K machine, can't plug in earphones. I get BSOD, sound stops working... Only a restart resets things, and the problem only starts again if I attempt to use earphones.  What a joke. Spent 5 hours on the phone with Dell, reinstalled windows, updated all drivers, issue still there. And Dell wants to compete with Apple?

I had this problem for several months, and just this weekend it seems to have been fixed. I updated a few drivers - that's all that I can think of that would have changed. It actually was fixed before I updated to the latest audio drivers. Could have been the Intel HID event filter driver?

I have the same problem.  No sound with headset, no sound from the speakers after plugging and removing headset.

I would think this is software related.

Dell can you help resolve this???

Another one with the same issue. I cannot plug headsets because I lose the sound. Once I was able to listen something but , of course, I unplugged them and the speakers were muted.

Outrageous!

BTW, the solution posted above did not work for me.

i have my laptop for only around 2 weeks.  Cost me over £1200 initially i noticed that when i plugged in headphones and removed them i no longer had speaker sound unless i rebooted but then when plugging in headhpones and removing them again i would have no speaker sound.

Then suddenly ive no longer got ANY SPEAKER SOUND whatsovever.  Dell are sending an engineer to look at;this wednesday, if they fix this fair enough if not i will need to either get a refund or replacement.

Im shocked at problems i and were having with Dells top of the line product.  I would add that apart from the sound issues this is a very good laptop but still not acceptable from such an expensive machine.

Thanks for the details.

This worked for me, but not until I did the opposite of step 6 - I disabled the Realtek HD Audio Manager along with everything else.  This gets rid of the popup window when inserting the jack.  Since all I ever use is my earbud+micro set, I don't need it.

So, did the engineer fix it?

I've contacted them and they are sending an engineer now to change the motherboard. Too bad

Has anyone contacted actual DELL Support regarding this?

I can't seem to find a way, Lol. This is a cimmunity forum. Dell doesnt read it by the looks of it.
