No Scan to PDF option available in device driver
When I try to scan from the icon in Printers and Devices software (Win 7 x64) there is no .PDF file type available, just image formats, however scanning does work. If I try to scan from the printer to a file I get a 017-998 time-out error. Any ideas?

From the looks of the error code, I'm guessing you have a Laser printer.
To scan to documents, PDF's and Fax, the OCR Program has to be installed on the computer that you're scanning to. The OCR Program is usually found on the printer disk.

Thank you Rick K. for your help.
What I did was: uninstall the printer, downloaded the most recent drivers for both printer and scanner, made sure the Microsoft XPS writer was installed (since some programs use this as a conversion point). Rebooted, installed the drivers, reconnected the Dell 3115cn printer, allowed the new drivers to be loaded, and there is still no .PDF option in the file type drop-down box.
The 017-998 error was almost certainly caused by a bad USB cable which was replaced. Scanning from the 3115 to a folder on the computer does work now, without error. Since I am choosing .PDF from the scanner console that works as well. It is just that the software doesn't allow for the .PDF format and doing a lot of scanning from the Dell MFP is very inconvenient.

Sorry for the delay, work. I know more about Dell Inkjet Printers than laser, so please bear with me.
On page 297 of the Dell 3115cn User's Guide, it mentions...
NOTE: You can use PaperPort's built-in OCR software to copy text from scanned documents so that
you can use and edit the text in any text editing, word processing, or spreadsheet program. The OCR
process requires textual images scanned at 150-600 dpi and 300 dpi or 600 dpi is recommended for
graphics.
Did you install PaperPort from the Printer disk?

As far as I know, as well as what has been mentioned with the answer above, scans don't recognize the PDF itself but OCR particularly. It goes that way because obviously PDF documents consist of several layers recognizable by the device software but yet it depends on what software and hardware are used to create them. It might well come as your document is actually one-layer pseudo-image so you need to check it firstly with the editor, e.g. this one https://pump-it-up-job-form.pdffiller.com/ others will fit as well except free ones, they're nothing but useless tools to do annotations. If there would be real issues with recognition so you'd need to fix them manually right away
