This is very likely a bad video chip - and on this model, that means the mainboard needs to be replaced.

I don't understand why that would be since it works perfectly on another monitor.

It's actually common for an external monitor to work for a while before the GPU fails completely - the circuitry that's failing is that which drives the internal screen.  You may be able to eke out some  time before the GPU fails completely -- but it will fail -- by using the external monitor.

How would I test if it is the GPU since I don't want to have to spend $200
