Perhaps dell got in a law-suit by someone claiming he became blind from staring at the small fonts. LOL . American companies can be pulled to court for almost anything these days.
Then next UXGA monitors will ship with the text above the LCD "This screen may be hazardous to your eyes".
No seriously, in Belgium it happens frequently the UXGA is not offered on some laptop models. One month it is there, the other month its gone. Perhaps it depends on the supply of the screens they have? Or maybe when they can't find a certain type of screen that answers to their specs or max price they simply drop it? My 8100 at the time I bought it had the SXGA screen as best option, a month later you could choose an UXGA.
If you trully want an UXGA you can call dell and ask for it. But I hope the waiting times in your country are better than here ( > 20 min).
I have (2) 8100's, both purchased slightly used on eBay. One is UXGA, the other is SXGA. If I were purchasing new, I would not pay $10 for the little bit of difference I can see between the two displays, based on my machines, as well as several others that I have used / observed.
Maybe too many other laptop owners have the same "view" on the subject. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

P.S. By the way, both of my 8100's have been really GREAT machines !!
They have the 5150 on a good end-of-week deal at Dell Canada www.dell.ca - SXGA+ with 3.06 CPU, 80 GB HD, wireless B/G card. 5150 might be gone soon and this could be the last high-power Dell notebook with a regular shape 15" display. I don't recall ever seeing them put out a deal like this right on the last day of their weekly sales cycle.
But a nice 8600 or 9100 is not much more money. And other brands are a pretty good deal now too.

I think the whole system is being phased out...... maybe getting rid of all 15" UXGA's? Not sure 100%, but that's my bet.
