How many processors are in the system?  Are they RDIMMS or UDIMMS ?

elec999 you can refer to the hardware manual for the R710 below:

downloads.dell.com/.../poweredge-r710_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf

Memory section starts on page 128 & the memory population chart is on pg.132

In a supported and optimal configuration you would use 12 of your 16 Dimms in optimizer mode

A1, A4 -  B1, B4

A2, A5 -  B2, B5

A3, A6 -  B3, B6

If you purchase 2 more like DIMMS you can full populate the slots.

Hello all

I just bought a dell R710 to be used as an opnsense server for the moment.  I purchased this server because all my friends at Dell said this server is built like a tank.

To the point

I currently have in in slots a1  a2 and b1 b2  4gb  the rest is empty

the seller also gave me 8X2gb  same speed as the 4gb

Can i mix and match within 1 channel for example

A1 4gb  A2 4gb                           B1 4gb  B2 4gb

a4 2gb  A5 2gb                            b4 2gb   b5 2gb

a7 2gb  a6 2gb                             B7 2gb   b8 2gb

If not how/ where  should i install the 2gb sticks

Thank you for all your response and  help

Hello,

Linked below are the owner's manual and the memory installation guidelines. Page 129 of the manual begins the section on memory.

• The memory configuration for each processor must be identical for optimal
performance.
• Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed (for example, 2 GB and
4 GB). All populated channels need not have identical configurations. The
mixed memory configurations must be of the size N+/-1.

You should find all the answers to memory questions in there, but let me know if you have a question you can't find an answer to.

Thank you for responding.

I did read this document before posting this message. I may be thick but definitely old but i do not fully understand what it is trying to say

If i read this correctly. I can put

in A 1 4 2 5 and in B 1 4 2 5 the 2 gb sticks

and

in A 3 6 and in B 3 6 the 4 gb sticks

Would this work?

Can i mix and match within 1 channel for example

A1 4gb  A2 4gb                           B1 4gb  B2 4gb

A4 2gb  A5 2gb                           B4 2gb  B5 2gb

A7 2gb  A6 2gb                           B7 2gb  B8 2gb
