What version of Windows do you have installed currently Windows 10 TH2?

To add some more details, this is a clean install of Windows 10 with only Dell's recommended drivers and Chrome installed.

Did you ever figure out your issue? I'm having the same exact problem with my refurbished 3147, it almost always shuts down instead of sleeping, even though it's set to sleep in all of the power options.

I'm within the return window but Dell support still hasn't responded to my email from a week ago.

I guess it depends on how you define finding resolution. I no longer have the problem. My solution was returning the computer and choosing not to use Dell laptops. Sorry I don't have anything better for you.

Seems like the only reasonable solution, after working with tech support on this and not being able to fix it. I'll be doing the same. Thanks for the update.

I have exactly the same problem. Tried a clean install of both Windows 10 and 8.1. Neither worked.

Mine is outside the return window so I guess it is useless now. My old Acer works great. Going back to a dual celeron-no touch screen. Hey, it works.

I don't think there is a fix for this. I've spent about four days working on this and tried everything including clean installations of Windows 10 and 8.1. Dell wanted me to pay more than the value of the laptop for technical support.

So now I use the 0-in-one lapblet as a desktop. No point in taking it off the powersupply since in just crashes on sleep.

There is one thing I might yet try. Linux. Has anyone tested if that works?

Tech support for it was horrendous. They missed the appointments they set to call me back. Their chat queue was constantly having issues (at least that's how they explained why I kept getting disconnected).

The funny part was when I told the tech support agent that the day they were wanting to setup the last callback was the same day my return window closed. They reassured me that everything would be fine. I didn't trust them and went ahead and RMA'd it the day before (in case they decided to have more convenient technical issues) It took 3 hours to get them to give me an RMA number, so I'm glad I did that.

The tech support rep called me back two days after the appointment they'd set with me to troubleshoot it. Two days after the return window closed. She asked me if she could help me troubleshoot the laptop. I told her I'd returned it already and she was really confused. I had to repeat myself like 6 times before she understood.

Really terrible support. I'm never buying a Dell again.

One thing you can do is change it so it hibernates when you close the lid instead of sleeping.

As far as Linux, even "user-friendly" distros like Ubuntu typically have trouble sleeping with a clean install as well. I suspect this issue is caused by a hardware issue anyway though, since it happens in Windows 8 and Windows 10 with clean installs.

Out of curiosity, when did you buy it? I wonder if the three of us all got the same exact laptop. I wondered about that when I heard that the OP had returned his. Was yours refurbished?

First of all on Windows 10 TH2, do you have UEFI BIOS Update A10?

http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER03686627M/1/3147A10.exe

In my Inspiron 13 7347 and Latitude 7350 I had a similar issue and this was due to an out of date Intel Management Engine Interface Driver. I installed the latest from Intel here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=intel+management+engine

The Inspiron 3147 doesn't have Intel Management Engine Interface listed so it may not install but try anyway. It has Intel Trusted Execution Driver. Try the latest drivers they list here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24892/Intel-TXE-Intel-Trusted-Execution-Engine-Driver-for-NUC5PGY-NUC5-x-PY

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25236/Intel-TXE-Intel-Trusted-Execution-Engine-Driver-for-DE3815TYKHE-DN2820FYKH

If that doesn't work disable fast startup. To do this right click the start button and select "power options". Select "choose what the power buttons do (to the left)". At the top select "Change Settings that are Currently Unavailable". Uncheck "Turn on fast start-up".

I have the exact same problem. Upgraded Bios to A10 on my Inspiron 11 3147 and now whenever I close the lid, put the computer to sleep from windows or leave it unattended for a period of time then the computer does not wake up. I can hear the disk and I can hear the fan but nothing comes on the screen and I am forced to hard reboot the computer. With each hard reboot at restart the windows file system check occurs in the background and takes longer for the computer to be ready for use. This is an issue with the bios version and needs to be fixed by Dell.

About 8 months after Windows 10 was first installed the problems disappeared. Obviously, Dell had failed to produce the right drivers and refused to tell anyone of the problem. Nice one. The laptop now works as designed, which is to say, not very well.

I've retired the Dell because it is poorly conceived and designed. The track pad is awful causing unwanted clicks and drags. I've replaced it with an old Lenovo x201 that is more powerful and does not have trackpad/touchscreen issues. Bulkier but a reliable workhorse.
