The system you're talking about is a Studio XPS M1640. You can find information on it here. The Service Manual details how to remove the Hard Drive and fit the new one.
If you go on the support site with the M1640, click on the "System Analysis" button and it will scan and give you the drivers. Click on system configuration then detect my system to get the service tag and other information - warranty (which will have expired), original config etc
Yeah you can........8GB is the maximum, made up of 2*4GB Dimms (The system supports DDR3 1066 MHz SODIMMs). The Dell part number you'll need for the 4GB Dimm(s) is Y995D
