Hey,

The Inspiron XPS is specifically geared towards gamers, and hence its higher price tag. Basically there aren't many differences between the two expect for the actual casing. The XPS has a different LCD cover, and the XPS case does not have blue accents like the I9100. Also, the XPS ships with its own backpack! Thats all there is!

Supported video card upgradeability, higher clock speeds, backpack, unique look, bonus cover. If you compare 9100 and XPS with exact same specs (outside of the bonuses preivously mentioned) then the XPS is a few hundred more expensive.

Actually, both offer supported video card upgradability as both have the same motherboards!

Dell's also pushing specialized gamer support with the XPS.

I wonder if they're going to train their East Indian support people to talk like Jesse and Chester from "Dude, where's my car?"

The difference is that it is supported by Dell on the XPS and there is a special service for having the upgrade done whereas on the i9100 you'll have to call Dell many times to get a card.

Or, you can order it yourself and replace it yourself, and hence the term "user-upgradable" Dell will provide the same service for I9100 users as well, as long as they pay them for the service (which is probably the same w/ the XPS)

But, if the only difference is the case, the lcd cover, etc, not really huge changes that affect performance really (maybe clocking speeds but oh well), then is the 9100 meant for gaming too?  Not meant for gaming, but can it?  It has to! Because a laptop with 3.2ghz, a gig of ram, a radeon 9700 mobility 128mb, etc, has to be meant for gaming, so the 9100 has to be meant for gaming, too!

What are the main cons with gaming on the 9100?  I cant think of any, as it seems to have almost all of the same hardware as the XPS, which is meant for gaming..

I'm glad I didn't pay an extra $1000 for a backpack and a cool cover.  I think people got bamboozled on that one.  Anyway, my 9100 plays all the same games as the XPS, including Doom 3, perfectly.  Also, I just got and upgrade from the Mobility 9700 to 9800 on my i9100 so I'm not sure what you are talking about when you say upgrades aren't supported on the i9100.  Seems so to me.

The 9100 is nothing but an XPS minus $1000 added to the pricetag.

Well, now I see they have discontinued the 9100 and have put Pentium M chips in the new 9200s and changed the whole design.

Great...I wonder what that means for us 9100 owners?
