The $250 off ($999 regular price) deal was a 4-day special. I just happened to catch it. Apparently Dell ran it about 2 months ago, and perhaps they will again. $999 is out of my range, too. :-)
Thanks for the review. Just what I wanted to hear. (I'm a FPS gamer and have been searching for a LCD screen). I sent you a private message, but I don't know if it got to you or not. I just wanted to know if there's a special way to purchase the 2001 FP for $750 or so as you did. Right now (April 20), Dell lists it for around $950, which is a little out of my range. Your advice and help on pricing would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the quick reply. It's too bad I missed that 4 day sale. I guess I could hold out to see if they offer it again or else I'll have to take my chances on Ebay. Most Ebay sellers are selling them for around $800 shipped. Supposedly, they are brand new, in box, not refurbished. Some sellers claim they get them directly from Dell. (I don't know HOW they get them so cheaply). Thanks again.
I cringed too but, for the price, I decided to try it and it worked out fine. From what I've read, anything that is returned to Dell for any reason cannot, by law, be re-sold as "new" even if was never even taken out of the box by the owner. Many times, monitors are returned simply b/c the owner didn't want it or couldn't pay for it or the owner claims the monitor has a problem. Anyway, all of them are tested and if they meet whatever the "new" standards are, they are re-sold as refurbished. As to why there are so many refurbished 2001FP's, Dell sells alot of them...its the only quality, high-end, 16ms, 1600X1200 20' monitor around that you can get for less $1,000...so, having 100 or so refurbished ones in inventory (which really isn't all that many) isn't surprising.
I'll have to decide if it's better to buy a "refurbished" one from Dell for $750 with a 90 day warrantee, or buy a brand new one through Ebay for $800 with a 3-year warrantee.
Be very careful with EBAY. While system warranties are transferable, monitor (and other accessory) warranties are not. Any seller that claims a 3 year warrantee, better ask them how they do it!
OTOH, if you buy new from Dell, you do get the 3 year warranty.
On the down side, Dell just raised the price to $1050. :-( (Luckily I hit a $750 with shipping sale back in January!)
I woke up this AM and was going to post the SAME thing about warranties for ebay units as I recall reading that too. Be careful. You'll want to verify from DELL exactly how it works but I believe Talmy is correct - the warranty is not transferable for units bought on ebay.
Well, I went ahead and ordered one of the refurbished 2001FP monitors from Dell outlet. There were about 100 from which to choose, each with different identifying numbers. I closed my eyes and ended up choosing number 60 on the list. I wonder how lucky I am. Is the monitor I just bought a perfect "gem," or did it fall out of the back of a pickup truck and bounce twelve times on the road where it was then hit by a passing passenger car which sent it careening off the road and down an embankment and into a river where it was washed downstream six miles and later found by camper on the shore of the river being torn apart by a hungry bear and then recovered and sent to Dell where it was pieced back together as good as possible and sold to me. I have no idea. I hope I'm lucky and get one that is perfect. The total cost with shipping was about $740. I guess I don't have to pay tax.
I'll let you know when it arrives how it looks and performs.
Great price...figure you saved ~$300. Anyway, my sources at Dell tell me that what you described is exactly what happened to no. 60 on the list. Best of luck with your new (well, nearly new) monitor.
Received my 2001FP refurbished monitor today (4/23). One thing for sure.....they sent it fast. Easy to set up. It appears new. Haven't noticed any dead pixels. Looks very good -- especially with digital images and HD content. White background looks a little hazy due to "screen door." I see this as well on my LCD home theater front projector. It's just part of that technology. Online games, such as Halo, appear very playable, although the CRT gave a slightly better image with this game. There is a little "ghosting" on quick movements, but something which doesn't bother me much. I think other games, such as Unreal Tournament 2004, will look quite good on this monitor. 1600 x 1200 will take me a while to get used to. Everything is smaller and the text is not as sharp against the slightly hazy white background. But, this is due to not being used to the new settings. Anyway, so far, so good. I'll need to play with it some more tonight.

I just became the proud owner of a 2001FP!
I'm curious, has anyone updated the monitor drivers with those found at http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?releaseid=r68954 ? (I'm pretty sure this link won't work, but if you copy and paste it into your address bar it should.)
I manually installed the driver on the CD that was included with the monitor already.
Thanks
