Inspiron 15-5000 Shuts down when I connect/disconnect AC adapter

I got this laptop newly refurbished and it was working fine. I would connect and disconnect the AC adapter during use and the laptop would keep running. Once I accidentally plugged the jack in only about half way and it stayed that way for a few seconds and an error came on the screen about not recognizing the adapter.

Since then, I'm not sure if it's related to that, but whenever I connect/disconnect the adapter, the computer reboots, immediately.

I shut it down, removed the battery and drained the laptop and it fixed the problem temporarily. It just keeps happening.

Help!!!

Hi HANKLAW,

What is the exact system model?

Are you using an original Dell Adapter? Is the adapter frayed?  Could you test with another power adapter if possible?

Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check.

Check if the adapter is detected in BIOS - Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.

Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
