Precision M6500 CPU

I bought a used M6500 about a year ago from a local pc store. It came with only 4GB of memory. I used the dell support to pull out the original manufacture's configuration which shows it can support up to 32GB. So I bought 8GBx2 from Fry's and put into it. But it won't boot up. Further research indicate that the this pc originally had a quad core i7-940xm which is supposed to be able to support 16GBx2. However, the property of the machine indicates it is a dual core i7-620 which only support up to 4GBx2. This indicate the original CPU was swapped out. As I want to put in 32GB memory, I went on bought another quad core i7-940xm which is identical to the original configuration (for about $140).

I would appreciate if anyone can give me an word whether the CPU I bought would work or not.

Thanks.

Here is the list of processors that could be ordered with the 6500

Arrandale
i7-620M, 2.66GHz, Dual Core
i5-540M, 2.53GHz, Dual Core
i5-520M, 2.4GHz, Dual Core
Clarksfield
i7-920XM, 2.0 GHz, Quad Core Extreme
i7-820QM, 1.73 GHz, Quad Core
i7-720QM, 1.6 GHz, Quad Core

Looking over the spare parts data base an I7 940xm was listed for the 6500 part number M72M1.

This isn't something that I have tried, so all I can say that you are correct in theory, and the system should be able to be upgraded.

If any of you out there have upgraded the processor in their 6500 please post here and let us know what you found out.

Hello;

I'm considering attempting to upgrade my processor on my M6500 because of pro tools issues.

I presently have an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 840 @1.87GHz 1.87 GHz. I also have 12 GB ram.  It seems to put more strain on the processor & I get errors. The ram seems ok for the application at 22% general use.

My question is which one of the processor's is best the 2.66GHZ, Dual Core, or the 2.0GHz, Quad Core Extreme, & how much improvement could I expect.

Thanks, in advance for any input.
