I did not have this issue for a long time. Only now it appeared again.

I seemed to have identified it as only occurring while the battery is charging (it was fully charged before, and after it was on battery). Once I plugged in the laptop, the random input started again.

Soon I will receive a motherboard and screen replacement, and I will see whether this resolved the issue.

Neither a screen replacement, nor a motherboard replacement fixed these issues.

I recorded it here with the latest drivers installed (A12 BIOS, A07 Intel HD graphics).

It only seems to occur while charging. For a moment I thought it was fixed, but this was merely because BIOS A12 was not charging <60% of the battery.

Furthermore, while testing this I also noticed brightness flickering on BIOS A12 is more intense while charging! Potentially a coincidence both are somehow related to when the battery is charging, ... perhaps not.

Please, I need to know that if you found a fix, because I ran into the excact problem too with my laptop, 9550,QHD,Touchscreen ... and it happens only while charging.

Rolling back to Bios 1.2.10 didn't fix it.

Please respond ASAP.

This issue is currently being escalated for me through Dell Support. It is likely (or rather, I hope given the tons of other problems I have been encountering with this machine) that they will simply provide me with a new unit at this point.

Thank you for reporting that you encounter the same issue. If I learn more I will reply to this post.

Thank you, I'll keep visiting this page to look for the news.

but do you think that it's a hardware problem or a software problem ?

I have just received my top of the line dell xps 15 uhd  1tb ssd 32 gigs of ram, cost all my savings. And it has got that exact same problem, works without the charger plugged in. I am thinking about why did I change from Lenovo to Dell. Has the problem been resolved ?

@Jacob I received a full replacement to fix this problem.

I hope it is just a coincidence that there is 'DK' in your name, and they didn't ship off my wonky old laptop that had this issue to you. (I live in Denmark)

Along with that touchscreen problem coincided that my battery would break down after a week of usage or so. I burned through two batteries that way. At first, I got a replacement motherboard and screen to fix these issues, yet this problem persisted after. Only then did I get my full replacement.

So, something to look out for. Once your battery light indicator starts flashing, this problem might be related. I believe I had a faulty adapter or something, or the wiring of the power plug was wrong.

I am wondering now though whether it could be the same machine, and in fact, given my experience with Dell over the past 4-5 months, I wouldn't be surprised if it is. In case you would ever open it up, I have got pictures of mine from before so we could compare. :)

They tried to push a refurb rev. 1 motherbord from 2015 07 07 into my brand new , under a day old, laptop from december 2016. it has a rev 2 motherboard and there are differences to see just at a glance. I refused and told them to come pick the laptop up and give me my $$ back. it ***.

The good, The bad and The ugly

A story about a Dell Dream machine

Denmark december 2016

The good

From the first time i saw the Dell XPS 14” infinity display i said to myself and my wife “when that thing comes in a 15.6 inch model, I am going to get it”

Then in december of 2016 i finally had the money and i put in an order for the top of the line 15.6” Dell XPS with the UDH touch display, 32 gigs of ram and a 1Tb m.2 ssd, the best.

Happy times it even came two days before schedule on a saturday, it was looking to be a good weekend.

I put on a big cup of coffee and unboxed the beauty and it is a beautiful piece of kit we all agree on that.  And there is something to be said about typing in your credentials on the operating system on new hardware.

The Bad

But not half done with my coffee first time that I touched the screen weird things happened white touch bubbles appeared on the vertical axis above and below my finger, when i touched the screen in a browser window it would zoom in zoom out and make all kinds of changes to the settings. It was just like putting on a blindfold and randomly touching the screen. Already a disappointment, being an electrician and now a electrical engineering student, I understand that things sometimes slip through, ok I have 24/7 support let me call them up and get this thing fixed. After a 1and½ hour long service call, with me installing drivers, uninstalling drivers, trying this and  trying that, we could finally agree that a repairman was needed onsite, this was saturday he was here tuesday.

The ugly

When the repairman started to work on my laptop everything was looking good , first he tried a new powersupply, but that did not help. next he began to remove the motherboard, but as he was unpacking the replacement board i noticed it was a refurbished motherboard and upon further inspection it turned out to be an earlier revision, Rev-1 2015-07-07,  than the one my laptop came with, Rev-2 2016-09-01. Remember my laptop was only half a day old made in december of 2016, and Dell wanted to replace the motherboard with an over a year old used part. Of course i stopped the repairman and told him to put the computer back together. When the he left i contacted Dell again, a mistake must have been made, but they said that it was Dell’s policy, and they had the right to use refurb parts for repairs. Maybe i could accept it if my computer was as old as the part they wanted to use, but to put an old used part in an otherwise unused laptop was unacceptable to me.

After many mails back and forth between me and the Danish Dell support they said that they would replace my laptop as a sign of goodwill, but then i would have to accept them using old parts, even if the laptop was dead on arrival. I told them to come get their laptop and give me back my money.

I am very disappointed.

@Jacob Would you be interested in collaboratively looking into this issue to possible do something about it in Denmark? The overlap with your case and mine is very striking.

For more details on my struggles for the past few months, I wrote a rather extensive blog post.

Unfortunately, although two of the major issues have now finally been fixed several months later (brightness flicker fixed in BIOS 1.2.18, and the touchscreen input I reported on here), new issues keep popping up and other ones are yet to be resolved.

This machine, and Dell support, is a nightmare. I hardly doubt any of this is in fact legal. It seems they are very knowingly reselling broken parts. One can only guess for what reasons. Possibly they don't they thorough testing and bug reports from users get lost (likely), or they simply use end-users as testers (given that this time they did try swapping the power supply on your end).

Therefore I already contacted the center for klageloesning where I have a case running. Possibly adding details of your encounter with Dell (especially since they are related!) might make them consider it a bit more seriously. Similarly, I was planning to contact retshjaelp.

You can contact me on the blog post in case you want to stay in touch. Thank you for sharing your story!
