Dell Inspiron 15 7000U Series Cracked Screen
Hi.
I have got a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series Laptop and recently my screen got cracked, I purchased it in March from Dells official eBay store and I have still got warranty on the laptop till March 2017.
The laptop has a big slash on the screen and starting from the left bottom of the screen to top middle of the screen. I can still see like 30%-40% of the screen well. But the rest I have colourful lines going on on the screen.
I contacted Dell customer support and they told me that they do NOT cover such damage and I have to pay for the repair. I tried to escalate this issue to the complaint department but I have been rejected. Long story short they sent me a quote of;
$891.00 for the parts needed and,
$165.00 for the repair, which makes it the total of $1065 in Australian Dollars.
I find that ridiculously expensive and am not willing to pay for it. The total cost of the laptop was $1,119.20.
I was wondering if anyone ha had the same issue before and if they did how they ended up resolving this issue.
Can anyone also recommend me a solution?
Any help I appreciate it.
My laptops screen is 15.6" and 1920 X 1080 Full HD

No manufacturer's warranty will cover a cracked screen - the damage is considered accidental. Those prices are quite steep -- you might want to contact a local repair shop for a quote. Assuming both the glass and LCD need to be replaced, in the US, the parts would run about $250-300, plus an hour's labor - a fraction of what you were quoted.

If you are reasonably adept (or know someone who is) you can repair it yourself. First go to the Dell support website, enter the service tag number for your computer and download the appropriate "owner's manual", which is actually a service manual. Mine, for instance, is titled "Dell Inspiron 17R Owner's manual", but in actuality is a 102 page, very detailed service manual. See what is involved in replacing the screen - on my 17R it is not all that difficult.
If you think you can repair it yourself or have someone who can, go on Ebay and Amazon and find a replacement screen. For my 17R they run US$60-US$120, I would expect a 15" screen wouldn't be more expensive, maybe even cheaper. Again, I don't know about your computer but my 17R screens come in matte or glossy finish, and 1920x1080 (WUXGA) or 1600x900 (WXGA) resolution. Make sure you pick one at least as high resolution as you have now. FWIW, I have 17Rs with both matte and glossy finishes, and both 1920x1080 and 1600x900 resolutions, I definitely prefer the matte 1920x1080 display.
If you are not comfortable attempting this repair yourself I would buy the screen and take it and the laptop to a decent computer repair shop. Labor to replace the screen shouldn't run over $100-$150.
