Unwanted "layered service provider" network software components have been known to produce strange problems resolving names. Try downloading and running  lspfix.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, obtain and install HijackThis, and submit a log file for analysis as described in the first link listed below.

Jim, You have solved my problem!! I am very grateful! The network technicians at work did not have a clue - I must say I am impressed. The ISPFIX did not work out, however a link on the same site to the program WINsockXPFIX worked out well. You were right there was a problem with Winsock2.I am in fact accessing the Dell forum from my own computer which earlier has not been possible. As you probably have understood by now, yes, I am very grateful. I am sorry that I too soon gave your answer only two stars. Post back and I`ll rate your new answer properly...

Engelbrekt,

Don't worry about the ratings. The important thing is that the problem's resolved.

Were there enough messages from LSPfix and WinsockXPFix so you could tell why LSPfix failed to resolve the problem, but WinsockXPFix succeeded?

You're welcome. It was good you persevered in spite of the negative result from LSPfix.

I'd suggest checking the machine once again for spyware/adware. Whatever caused the problem with the "Layered Service Provider" feature wasn't something you'd invited!

Hi, Jim. No unfortunately no information was provided by any of the programs except for LSPfix stated that 0 files were removed - and there did not seem to be any processing on the system whilst WinsockXP asked me to reboot and completely deleting all information in the network settings. Sorry not very helpful. Again thank you!
