If possible, try to run the diagnostic tool to check the hardware and Memory on the system by following steps below.

1. Power off the system. Remove all peripherals except AC adapter

2. Power on system, quickly start tapping the F12 continuously until you see Preparing one time boot menu in the top right corner of the screen. Note: soon as you power on system start tapping the F12, one hand on the power button and the other hand on the F12 key.

In the boot menu, stroll down to Diagnostic and then click on it. After quick tests, click on Hard drive and then Thorough Test Mode. After, click on Memory as well. Report back any error code.

'Page fault in nonpaged area"

Whenever I see this error code, it usually an issue with Memory or the hard drive. When you reseated the memory modules, did you hear a series of beeps?

Thanks for the replies.  Unfortunately the problem with the laptop means that it shuts down before even the POST, so I am unable to run any diagnostics.

What I have found out since the original post is that the HDD, battery and WiFi lights  flash in certain patterns after shutdown and these give clues to the problem:

www.dell.com/.../a-reference-guide-to-the-precision-mobile-diagnostic-indicators

In the case of my laptop I get ON-FLASH-ON indicating that "Memory is detected but has errors"

I have tried all combinations of the two DIMMS together and individually in all four slots in the laptop but always get this error.

I tried powering up without any DIMMs installed and got the lights showing ON-FLASH-FLASH indicating "No SODIMMs are installed"

I also borrowed a couple of different DIMMs from another system and they also gave me the  "Memory is detected but has errors" flashing lights.

So, if the DIMMS are OK and the laptop recognises when no DIMMs are installed, what is likely to be the problem component?

Thanks again for your answers
