This morning I tested a fresh Windows 10 installation. No internet, Dell supplied drivers, ... no go.

The moment that "Microsoft Basic Driver" is replaced by Intel driver 20.19.15.4531 (A05), the laptop screen turns off and stays off forever.

From the Device Manager, the panel is MONITOR\LGD03EA.

It sounds like you may have replaced the wrong part -- the display panel was likely OK, but the mainboard (GPU) is the faulty part.

Can you get a good image on an external screen when the display panel in the system goes dark?

The problem with the original panel was that it flickered randomly, but everywhere - Windows, Safe Mode, BIOS, LCD BIST.

The new panel has no such problems. I've used it hours now.

But it works only when absolutely no video drivers are installed.

Yes, external displays work on HDMI, DP and dock (HDMI) connection, with Intel drivers (when the panel is off).

Took the pictures using the fresh Windows 10 installation

Picture 1 - Dell Intel Drivers installed, external monitor, a single monitor in Device Manager, panel completly off (no backlight)

I also have a photo of the original panel.

When flickering and even when the display was black, the backlight was on.

@enj63

My E7440 has a touch panel. I brought the entire display assembly, waited 30 days, and had it replaced yesterday.

I saw the cardboard box, it was very Dell like.

If there isn't a Dell part number on the back of the panel, I'd say that, together with the symptoms, point to a screen that's not compatible with your system.
