XPS 9000 Graphics Card Driver Question
My Service Tag says that for my PC's Video Card, which is from the ATI Radeon 5800 series, that this driver is the one to install to update the video card:

The problem is that Windows says I have Driver Version "8.850.0.0" with a driver date of 4/19/2011 (19 April 2016).
Will installing R242631.exe basically be the same as downgrading the driver version that I currently have? 8.66 appears to be less than 8.850, even though 8.66.'s last update was 20 May 2016.

I got that 8.850.0.0 driver via Windows Update.
Also, if I use AMD's tool to potentially get new drivers, I would need to uninstall Catalyst Control Center first, right (since I am not switching video/graphics cards)?

So where did you get 8.850.0.0?
Sometimes those dates get changed because Dell may have updated the installer without changing the driver itself, or they may have reloaded the old file on the server.
Go by the version number and if you have 8.850, you probably don't want to go back to 8.66, though both version numbers seem a bit odd -to me...
If you want to see if there's anything newer than 8.850, go directly to AMD's site and use their wizard to scan your hardware and offer a newer driver, if any, for your version of Windows.

No, you shouldn't need to uninstall first. Their driver package installer should be smart enough to see what's installed now and update accordingly, unless -of course- it tells you to uninstall first...
If you got 8.850 via Windows Update, it's probably already the latest one available. But I hate when Windows Update updates drivers like that because you don't have much control over things.

I never trust Windows Updates. I have them turned off on all of my systems. I check them manually. I would go straight to AMD if I wanted to update the driver. The last official AMD release for this legacy video card was dated 3/1/16. But if you are not gaming on this system, not necessary. If you are into gaming, time to upgrade the video card.

ALL radeon hd 2000, 3000, 4000,5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 SERIES ARE LEGACY NOW.
ANY UPDATES TO NEWER DRIVERS WILL NOT EVER WORK.
WHQL certified driver, the AMD Catalyst™ 15.7.1 driver will continue to be available for users running Windows® 10, Windows® 8.1, and Windows® 7.
This also means the detect tool wont work with these cards anymore.
You have to manually select driver for your version of windows.
