The jack next to the headphone out is the Microphone In Jack.  The 1100 does not have a dedicated low frequency out jack (nor do any other Inspirons that I know of).  To use a subwoofer you could get a multichannel USB sound card that has a dedicated subwoofer jack, or run the headphone out to a receiver or powered subwoofer/speaker set that has its own crossover.

Hey, I have an Inspiron 1100 notebook, and the audio speakers are not working. The earphone jack is able to play audio, but the pc speakers do not. There is no mute, or the volume is not down, so I am not quite sure what the problem is. I have looked many places, programs, system information, device manager, it all... I havent found anything to know what is wrong. It happened 3 days, after the power went out. I thought it was just minor, seeing Ive fixed my computer a couple of different times, just it didnt go away. I was hoping that someone would be able to help. My audio hardware is SigmaTel C-Major Audio. Thnx for everything.

Power failure eh?  Try running the Dell Diagnostic CD, if you have'nt done so already.

Hi,

I have a little problem with my speakers as well.  If I plug my headphones to listen to music, I can hear the audio.  But if I unplug them, I can't hear anything.  I have to restart my computer every time I use the headphones.  This also happens when I let the laptop in standing by mode, and then if I turn it on, no sound.  Anyone knows what's going on??
