XPS 9550 - Trouble with external monitor 4K@60Hz
My new XPS 15 9550 does not seem to support external monitors in 4K@60Hz correctly.
I have updated all of the drivers and BIOS to the very latest files available on the Dell support page, including the newest Thunderbolt 3 driver and firmware.
I have managed to connect the laptop to the monitor (4k@60Hz) using a usb-c/tb3 to displayport adapter (kiwibird's). It works (and image is fine), however when the monitor goes to standby, it's almost impossible to wake it up again (I have to unplug the monitor, turn it off, turn it on again, and plug it again...).
When the laptop is connected to the same monitor using hdmi ports (1.4), I am not experiencing any trouble (wake up does work), but I'm stuck at 4k@30hz (as expected).
I have contacted Kiwibird support, they've told me the standby issue is a known issue related to the Dell's thunderbolt 3 driver when Dell XPS 15 (9550) is connected with 4K monitor. I have not found a confirmation so far (on the forums) that it's indeed a software issue, and I'm still wondering if the adapter is working correctly.
Any thoughts ?
Maybe another cable and/or adapter brand, either DP or HDMI, is working correctly (4k@60hz and standby/wakeup works) ?

It looks like the only input on the U2713HM that supports its maximum resolution is DisplayPort. The TB16 has full-size DisplayPort and Mini-DisplayPort outputs on it, which work identically to each other -- so all you would need is either a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable, and you'll be good to go. There is no adapter that will allow you to connect an HDMI output (on the dock) to a DisplayPort input (on the display). You can only go the other way around, i.e. DisplayPort output to HDMI input, although that won't help in this particular case because the U2713HM's HDMI input is limited to 1080p, which means its DVI input probably is as well.

Hi there,
I have a XPS15 9560 with a TB-16.
I am able to connect my external monitors (Dell U2713HM), via HDMI, to the TB-16, but I am restricted to 1920 x 1080.
I have followed all the instructions to properly install the required drivers for the TB-16.
I am at a loss.
Does the HDMI output port (both from the XPS andthe TB-16) limit the display to 1920 x 1080?
Do I require a specific cable(s)/adapter(s)?
Put simply, how do I get 4k external monitors; I am meant to be able to extend my display to 'two' 4k external monitors..... how do I manage that?

If you haven't already, you may want to go to support.dell.com and retrieve the manual for the TB16 (found by choosing Select product > Accessories > Docks > TB16), where you will find the supported display configurations. But in short, HDMI is not limited to 1920x1080. However, have you confirmed that your U2713HM will accept higher than 1080p resolution over HDMI? You may want to check the manual for THAT as well, since some displays only accept higher than 1080p resolution over their DisplayPort inputs. If the display isn't the issue, then if you haven't already, you may want to try a different HDMI cable. Can you also confirm that you're connecting your U2713 directly to the HDMI output on the dock rather than using a DisplayPort to HDMI dongle?
For dual 4K displays, the only outputs on the TB16 capable of 4K @ 60 Hz are the two DisplayPort outputs (mini and full-size) and the USB-C/Thunderbolt output. You can use up to two 4K @ 60 Hz displays at a time, and you could also optionally keep the built-in panel running at the same time in that configuration. In order to set it up, you just need displays that support this resolution connected via the appropriate outputs on the dock. From there, everything will work just like setting up dual displays of any other resolution.

UPDATE: I went and checked for you. The U2713HM is limited to 1080p over HDMI. That's the cause of your problem.

thanks - so what connector / adapter combination would allow for higher resolution? i tried a DVI adapter into my screen and was not able to get higher resolution.

Actually, it looks like the U2713HM's DVI input can also accept its maximum resolution, but only when you're using a dual-link DVI cable connected to a dual-link DVI output -- and there's no HDMI to dual-link DVI adapter/cable, so the DVI input won't be useful in your case. There are some DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapters, but they're fairly expensive and it would be pointless for you to use one because the U2713HM has a built-in DisplayPort input anyway -- so just buy one of the DisplayPort cables I mentioned above and you'll be fine.
